Part two of my Batam City Square Mall Tips with more pictures:

the Batam City Square Mall is large mall and is a center of activity in Nagoya Area of Batam. This huge mall opened in 2009 and has become a shoppers delight where there are about 6 levels for shopping and inside You can catch a movie there since they have 4 movie theaters. The mall also has karaoke, lounge, Timezone arcade, bowling and slot machines plus several Money Exhange Shops at the basement where you can change your Singapore Dollars to Indonesian Rupiahs since tey don't accept Singapore Dollars in this Mall. My favorite area of the Mall will be the Assorted Indonesian Goodies at the Food Court area of the Mall and for my cousin, the Local Kentuck Fried Chicken near the Entrance.

What to buy: a lot depending on what you like but again buying local and international products are cheap here since Batam is a Duty Free Area. I bought lots of Keropok Crackers and eaten at the food courts the Apokat and Chendol and the Ais Kacang.

What to pay: depends on what you buy but always remember that the whole of Batam Island is a Duty Free Area so what you Buy here in Batam City Square will be cheaper since there will be no local tax.

Ralph Lauren Stores: Lots of Ralph Lauren Stores (selling overruns)

by machomikemd Updated May 21, 2011
    A Polo Store
    4 more images

you will see that in batam, there are lots and lots of Ralph Lauren Stores (I doubt if they are accredited by Ralph Lauren) selling assorted Ralph Lauren Products mostly export overruns and rejects (batam is a free port hence labor here is cheap that Companies like Ralph Lauren take advantage of the cheap labor force to mass produce Ralph Lauren Products here due to lower overhead costs and re-shipped them to the united states). Indonesia is one of the major labor supplier for cheap US Branded products like Ralph Lauren but also in other parts of Asia like Macau, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Thailand and China and I can say with clarity as a Ralph Lauren buff that the Ralph Lauren Products sold here are limited to the ones produced in Indonesia (unlike buying in factory outlet stores in macau and in Subic bay philippines where ralph lauren products are not only from the ones made in macau or the philippines but for other ralph lauren products made in other countries (again export overruns or factory rejects ok).

What to buy: Lots and lots of Ralph Lauren products but beware since many of the mechandise have slight defects or export overruns since the sizes are different for american bodies from asian bodies for example, a polo shirt with a size of Large by US size means XXL size here in Asia.

A Sample will be a polo ralph lauren cap which I bought at a Ralph Lauren Factory outlet in Gilroy California that costs $ 23 and is made in the Philippines, I saw a similar cap here with a different color and it's made here in indonesia and costs $ 20 (just a difference of 3 US dollars!) while the same cap which a saw in a mall selling ralph lauren export overruns in Subic bay, the cap only costs $ 14!. Need I say more on the other products I say for comparison.

Still, if you won't have the time or money to go to Macau or Subic Bay in the philippines to buy not only Ralph Lauren Export overruns but also Tommy Hilfiger or Old Navy or Gap or Anne Klein or Calvin Klein or Nautica or Hollister and other brands, then just buy the limited to only Ralph Lauren export overrun products here.

What to pay: depends on what you buy like Baseball caps at 160,000 rupiah, polo shirts at 400,000 rupiah and t-shirts at 300,000 to 350,000 rupiah.

Looking for preserved food? Head down to Jodoh, where they sell them per kilograms.
The trick is to ask them not to add too much water in the plastic bags, cos they will weigh more.

What to buy: Preserved Mangoes (Mangga Jerok)

there is a RL shop here

I suggest that if ever you wanna buy original RL clothes, (for men, women, kids) buy it in Batam!!! If you're in Singapore, it's just an hour ride in a ferry. When we came there, it was sale and the prices are really cheaper than in Manila!!! Don't worry, those are authorized retail outlets of RL. They are just simply cheap because the labor costs are cheap.

BCS Mall (Batam City Square): Looks interesting!

Did not enter but while on my way to Megamall, this 4-5 story high mall caught my eye with Texas Chicken on its ground floor, Seoul Garden & Breeks signs adorning its walls... stuff like this attracts a Singaporean's eye whilst in Batam. Oh & "Golden Trophy" which I presume is a cinema. This is one of the newer malls like Nagoya Hill.

The Nagoya Hill Shopping Centre is a new and very big centre located somewhere behind Nagoya Plaza Hotel along the main road Jalan Imam Bonjoi. Besides the usual shops, there are a Matahari Department Store (famous department stall chain in Indonesia) as well as a Hypermart supermarket located here.

We saw many shops that are named after Singapore icons, like Hotel Merlion, Singapore Massage centre, Singapore Hair styling art, Singha restaurant etc. Presumable to lure Singapore visitors so that they feel at home.

    What to buy: anything

What to pay: at least 20-30% cheaper stuff compared to Singapore prices
