One of the Largest Chinese Temples of South East Asia and the difference here is that both the Buddhist and Taoist Deities are present side by side since usually the chinese buddhist temples and taoist temples are not located in the same area. The Temple is included in any Batam Day tour package from Singapore and the entrance is free, you will see an assortment of Chinese Buddhas and Chinese Buddhist Saints in the complex for assorted Taoist Deities and you can buy religious stuff at the religous stuff in the complex and also try the Vegetarian Restaurant in the Complex (pls see my separate vegetarian restaurant tips in the restaurant section).

Sticking your toes in the sea...or is it a bay?

by twoseids Updated Apr 4, 2011
    Batam, Indonesia

As I mentioned, my main reason was to go and get another stamp in my passport. I also figured it would be fun to swim in the Pacific Ocean. I didn't know at the time that it was actually the South China Sea, but anyway...

I ended up at Waterfront City, which turned out to be a bay - not even open sea as far as the eye can see! I felt gypped.

Look at the website below (or see this pic) for a map of popular resort locations. Then you can figure out where you would want to go.

    Vietnames Refugees Camp

by rafighi Written Dec 12, 2009
    Boat in Vienamese Camp, Batam
    2 more images

Batam was once a sudden become the world's attention and the UNHCR (United Nation High Commission for Refugees), because it became a shelter of Vietnamese refugees. Visiting this former refugee camp, we can recall wrenching stories behind the camp which is located in the village named Sijantung.
This human tragedy starts from the conflict between South Vietnam and North Vietnam (Vietcong) in the 1970s. Takeover of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam by North Vietnam in 1975 triggered the recurrence of war again. This situation is forcing thousands of Vietnamese exodus out of the country.
The refugees generally use a small boat and loaded with dozens of people who later called boat people. With a small boat of Vietnamese refugees a few years ago risked crossing the South China Sea, in order to get a better life. After floating in the sea, some for months or even up to half a year, many of them are stranded until the waters of Indonesia, including Tanjung Pinang, Natuna, Teluk Keriting, Batu Hitam, Tg. Unggat, Sungai Walang and other areas. In 1979, the UN high commission in charge of refugees (UNHCR) in cooperation with the government of Indonesia chose the island covering an area approximately 80 ha to accommodate refugees scattered, before they were transferred to a third country.

eat pepper crab at batu besar

you can hire a cab and ask to go to batu besar for chilli/pepper crab or just to get out of the town. it is a laid back kampung near the sea. try cahaya seafood, a small, non descript kelong that oversees the south china sea (i think)... try late afternoon when not so crowded. ask for crabs (cheap and fresh), sambal kang kong and freshly opened coconut juice!
