    BatamFast Ferry

From Singapore, we took a ferry from HarbourFront. Got to be there 1 hour before departure. We bought an open return ticket, which means that we don't need to confirm the time of return yet. We can get the return ticket from Batam after we finish our shopping :)
I booked our ferry tickets through BatamFast.

    Hang Nadim Airport (Part 2)

    Hang Nadim Airport, Batam, Indonesia

Attached are photographs taken during my flight from Jakarta to Batam in January 2008. The flight from Jakarta to Batam takes about 1 hours 20 minutes, and several domestic airlines fly this route e.g. Batavia Air, Mandala Airlines, Air Asia, Merpati Airlines, Garuda Airlines, Kartika Airlines etc. It is much cheaper flying Jakarta-Batam than Jakarta-Singapore as the return airfare for the former costs about 800,000 Indonesian ruppiah return (about Singapore $140) whereas the latter will cost at least Singapore $250 for budget airlines such as Valuair.

    A Hazy View of Singapore

There are a couple of ferry operators that depart from Singapore Harbourfront Ferry Terminal. My friends and I used Penguin Services. There's a ferry to Batam nearly every hour, and the ferry ride was pretty smooth.

The cost of the return boat ride is about $33.

    Punggur ferry terminal, Batam, Indonesia

If you want to travel to neigbouring Bintan island from Batam, then you need to go to the Punggur ferry terminal located at the south-eastern end of Batam to take the regular ferries (about half to one hour intervals) to Tanjung Pinang in Bintan (about 1 hour) or Tanjunguban in Bintan (about 20 minutes). The ferry to Tanjung Pinang cost about US$7 return. From Tanjung Pinang, you can take speed boats to other islands e.g. Pulau Singkep (see my VT Pulau Singkep page).

Batam to Lingga Islands by Air

SMAC plane from Batam to Lingga Islands
    2 more images

PT Sabang Merauke Raya Air Charter (SMAC) is a small region airlines which offer flights from Batam island's Hang Nadim airport to Pulau Singkep (see my VT Pulau Singkep and Pulau Lingga pages) via Bintan island. The fight from Batam to Singkep is three times a week (10am on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays) and flight time is about 1 hour. Return flights from Singkep to Batam are at 11.30am on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays (the same plane is used). The plane is a small one and can seat about 20 people. Cost is about 300,000 Indonesian ruppiah return (about US$40). There are no flights to Pulau Lingga, you have to fly to Pulau Singkep and then take boats to Pulau Lingga.

Flights offer the fastest way to reach Singkep Island and the views are spectacular (see travelogue section of my VT Pulau Lingga page for more photos taken from the plane). The plane is basic and you will be served some buns and mineral water on board. The plane is rather hot while on the ground and once it takes off, they will increase the air-con and it will feel better.

The ferry terminal located at Batu Ampar (called the Citra Tritunas Ferry Terminal) is a very new ferry terminal which is very near to Nagoya (capital of Batam). There are frequent ferry services from Singapore to Batam by Wave Master ferry company which is about 40 minutes one way. Ferry services start from around 7am to 9.30pm with regular intervals. There are a few cafe at this new terminal, and customs clearance is very fast and efficient. If you want to contact the Wave Master ferry service, their telephone number is 65-62720501 (singapore) and 62-778-7415100 (batam).

    Batam Center Ferry Terminal, Indonesia

The Batam Center Ferry Terminal is the place where ferries from Singapore will arrive and depart (Penguin Ferry & Batam Fast). This is a relatively new building with some shopping and eating places. Across the road is a big shopping centre called Mega Mall (see my shopping tips). More information on the ferry schedule is at the webpage below. There is also another newer ferry terminal at Batu Ampar (Wave Master ferry) which is much nearer to Nagoya city (capital of Batam) with ferry services between Singapore and Batam (see my Citra Tritunas Ferry Terminal tip).

    Ferry leaving Singapore....

There were two main ferry services and several tours to Batam. I used Batam Fast. The cost is the same as it is competitive.

There are 3 main arrival points at Batam and so decide ahead where you want to land in Batam. I headed for Batam Ferry Terminal which is closest to Nagoya Center.

    Taxi in Batam

by hannesa Written Nov 26, 2006

Getting around Batam can get very tricky, uless you are a regular visitor to the Island. The locals are very friendly but can be very deceiving. They are 'Yes Sir", "No promblem" as their vocab is very limited.

Negotiate the fare before you take a taxi.

It would be best to take a tour package from Singapore agent to make all the land tranfer. They usually have a reasonable rate and its worth paying as all arrangements are made in Singapore and the person that greeted you are from either the hotel driver or the appointed driver from agent in Singapore.

Highly recommeded if you travel in small group or families.

By Sea : Batam can be reached Tanjung Pinang by ferry, it will take about 2 hours. Singapore is about ½ hour away by ferry.

By Air : Hang Nadim International Airport has the longest runway in the whole of Indonesia. There are flights daily between Batam and Jakarta and frequently flights to other areas of Indonesia.. Garuda is the main Indonesian airline.

    View of Batam from Ferry
    1 more image

The ferry ride can be fun if it is not raining. Just go up to the top deck, which is open and enjoy the sea breeze. You may carry a can of soft drinks, which are freely available in the ferry at nominal rates. You will see plenty of big ships passing by. This passage through the South China sea is supposed to be one of the busiest transit routes for the freight ships and no wonder, Singapore sea port is supposed to be the busiest sea port of the world.
