If you take the farry over from Singapore, I'd suggest to book a taxi at the terminal before you step down the stairs....they seem to be quite an honest bunch and the prices are standardised.
Otherwise same rules apply here as anywhere else in Asia - make sure you have a price negotiated and agreed upon before entering any cab. There are quite a lot of taxis on Batam and they can be quite persistent.

Ask your friends who have been go to Batam.
May be they know who the trustable taxi driver.
some of taxi drivers will charge you with the higher taxi fare.

If you want to buy something i.e cigar at hawker, shop (toko), u need to ask for the price first before take it and give money... they can cheat you for the high price...
