Keropok with dip by bpacker If you're ever at the lotus cafe @ the Angsana Bintan, the waitress will probably give you some keropok (prawn crackers) for the appetiser. Make sure you ask for the chilli-red sambal dip ( a kind of chilli sauce) to go with it. It's bloody addictive. Leave a Comment

Bebek Ketumbar in Nice Surroundings by bpacker The most delicious dish at the Lotus Cafe@Angsana Bintan, I feel is the "Bebek Ketumbar" or BBQ Duck cooked with fragrant corriander, lemongrass and chilli. I never knew duck could taste this good. Or could it be the surroundings? After all, Lotus Cafe faces a large, lush garden overlooking the sea. Having been brought up in a Peranakan household, we've only braised ( Itek Siok) or dunk our ducks in broth ( Itek Tim ) so BBQing added a more interesting dimension to the otherwise wild taste of duck. The BBQ duck dish is served with a lovely complement of rice cooked with coconut milk, succulent eggplant sambal and bitter, crispy crackers called "emping". All delicious, but the serving size was too gargantuan for an Asian. But at USD12, I suppose they'll give you for your money's worth.. Leave a Comment

BBQ under the Stars by bpacker Hubby and I had a delicious, romantic dinner under the stars and near the surf while at Angsana Bintan. Hmm, we feasted on broiled crawfish, stingray, lamb, beef and watched as the polite chefs bbq one delicious food item after another. If it's a romantic al fresco dinner you're after, this is it. The waiters are also discreet but attentive over here so you'll generally have a nice time. The BBQ buffet dinner happens only on Fri and Sats. It's about USD26 per head. Ask for a table near the shore. Leave a Comment

Gado Gado, Indonesian Salad by bpacker The next time you're in Indonesia, go for the local salad which consists of a mixture of raw and slightly cooked vegetables served with a spicy peanut sauce made with chilli and coconut milk. Delicious. You'll get an assortment of fried tempeh, bean curd, long beans, Chinese salad leaves, bean sprouts, etc. The one I ate at the hotel wasn't too bad though I felt that they could use "emping" or bitter belinjo crackers instead of ordinary prawn crackers for garnish. Cafe Helo Helo by DarkRay If you wish for a change from the usual limited (and rather expensive) fare from the hotel restaurants, do visit Cafe Helo Helo in Pasar Oleh Oleh (corny name I know....). The whole concept of Pasar Oleh Oleh may be a little "touristy", but at least this restaurant and the minimart's good. The fare served here is typically South-East Asian (and somewhat Singaporean) with a strong Chinese influence.
The chilli-crabs (S$20 for medium) are very good and fresh. The prawns did not taste as fresh, but was still good. In fact, I think the chance of getting bad food from here is very slim. Oh yeah, the only thing which did not taste good was the sugar cane juice which tasted as if extra sugar was added. Kelong Restuarant by kielorla The most satisfying restuarant so far. It is locate on the sea and has a very nice ambience. You have to reach there early like 6pm when the sky is still bright to enjoy the sea view, as we end our spa session at 7pm, all we got when we reached there is darkness. But the sea breeze is so cool and relaxing. They serve nice and cheap seafood and the dishes are also very delicious. We didnt order seafood but we order 3 dishes, fried malay noodle, broccoii with mushroom and lemon fried chicken and the bill is only S$40. The most satisfying and delicious meal so far. Baan Aarya Thai Restaurant by kielorla This is a restuarant that gives me a heart attack when i see the bill. The restuarant is locate just outside Mayang Sari, there will have chartered bus to drop you at the restuarant or you can walk about 5min. It has a terrific view of the sea and the sunset but you have to reach there early like maybe 6pm. We reached there late around 7pm after Spa and the sky is already dark. Nice ambience but the food is terrible expensive. It cost S$25 for a normal green curry chicken, we order 2 main course and 2 appettizers and we got ourself a S$120 bill. And the worst thing is we didnt get to see the nice romantic sunset with all those money spent. Leave a Comment

Kelong restuarant by kielorla They serve the freshest seafood as they rear their seafood below the kelong. When you have placed the order, the chef will catch the seafood and cook immediately. From the pic, you can see that they have their very own seafood farm Leave a Comment

Kelong Seafood by Lydeeana Lovely spread of cheap seafood. Order the spicy mussels and sweet and sour squid...yummy. You need to brace yourself for the adventurous half-hr drive on an undeveloped road. You'll zoom pass several villages for a qucik view of a way of life there.

I had dinner here, a S$15 Nasi Padang meal (in Singapore, you can get it for S$4-S$5), though the offering was various and tasty - I get about 8 side dishes to go with my rice! My complimentary breakfast was taken here as well - and the International spread was quite good - a good tasty offering of bacon, sausages, omelettes, cereals, fruit salads, porridge etc. Good food.
