When we saw these honeycombs high up in a roadside tree, we stopped to make some pictures and were accosted by the people who lived there. They invited us to stay the night over and witness the honey harvest. Passing the time until harvest was due to begin, the local minister found out that Theo had been a teacher at Satya Wacana University, where he had studied theology, so our meeting became a joyful reunion!
The honey is harvested twice a year, so it was sheer luck that we were there at the right time (first week of August 2009). This is how the harvest is done. Choose a week around new moon, so that the nights are dark. During daytime install bamboo ladders to the tree-tops, using smaller trees to approach the main tree sideways. At night one man climbs op the ladders with a torch and a bucket. He then disturbs the bees, at the same time making a rain of sparks with his torch. The bees let themselves be guided by the only light available and fly down following the sparks to the ground. They will stay on the ground until daybreak, because without any light they are lost! Now the man up the tree can loosen the honeycomb without being attacked by the bees and carry it down in his bucket.
This was in Loli hamlet, halfway between Soe and Kefamenanu, but still in TTS province, so we post the tip under Soe. We were given a bottle of natural honey to take home, which we did all through Oecusse and Timor-Leste. Fortunately the customs accepted our story.

Open water is scarce on Timor, so evidently a lake like Supul has its attraction for the local population. Actually it more like a marsh, but said never to be dry even after a long dry season. We were also told that the water is not fit for swimming as it causes a skin rash. Nevertheless anglers stand kneedeep in the water for long periods.
There is a picnic spot adjacent to the main road, popular with local youth. Try to enter into a conversation with them. Unfortunately the popularity of the spot causes the usual litter of plastics bags, cups, etc.
Directions: Supul lake is located aside of the Soe – Niki-Niki road, at 23 km from Soe, or 4 km past None village and 4 km before you reach Niki-Niki centre.

At the roadside in the centre of Fatumnasi village stand two tombs of the Oematan royal family of the Mollo tribe. The tombs are recent. Loth Oematan died in 1997 and his wife Amalia Baker in 2002. We did not find out why this couple is buried here and not at the Mollo royal cemetery.

The Fatumnasi mountain range consists mainly of limestone, but there are some marble rocks too. One active marble quarry is visible from the road to Fatumnasi. It can be approached by a dirt road, but access is then blocked by a gate. The quarry seems to be one big marble hill, which they are cutting down systematically.
More marble hills exist, but fortunately so far they are not being exploited. Cutting the marble pollutes a scarce resource of the local population: water.

And again a few km beyond Bola Palelo lookout in the direction of Kapan is the Oelbubuk botanical garden, a research station of the provincial agriculture department. Unfortunately we found no one around able to explain the activities to us botanical lay people.
But it is good to know that here is an alternative to Oehala falls for a fresh dive. The garden includes a very clean little pool which you may use for just Rp 1000.

It's just 2 km beyond the Oehala falls access road, so why not ask your ojeg to go the extra distance to enjoy the view of Mutis mountain at Bola Palelo lookout point. It will make you want to travel further into the highest mountain range of West Timor with un-Indonesian alpine scenery.
