Soe is fast catching up on the internet. Here are some locations with internet access, there probably will be more soon.
(1) On our first night we sought out the Telkom Office (located near the mosque). They had one workstation and that night the connection was abominable, but later it was quite ok. Their rate is Rp 10,000 an hour. They also told us they had started marketing Telkom's Speedy fast access, and guess what ....
(2) a week later Hotel Bahagia Dua had its own Speedy access for Rp 15,000 an hour.
(3) If you are staying at Bahagia Dua and willing to walk ten minutes, a cheaper option is:
UKB SKB Amanuban Barat, Jalan Kayuputih – Kesetnana, phone 0388-21019.
This is a government-owned facility for students and charges only Rp 5,000 an hour.
Drawback: should be open from 8.00 am to 22.00 pm, but they close shop when they find there are no customers.
(4) A good alternative near Telkom and BRI bank is:
Warnet LK, run by pak Wim
Jalan Kartini 26
Fast internet for Rp 6,000 an hour.
(5) If Warnet LK is full, there is another warnet near the pawn shop (Pegadaian), ask for it.

For our daily shopping we were well served by the 3M supermarket on the corner opposite Hotel Bahagia Dua. The full name of the shop is MiniMarket Mutiara.
The Chinese owner was very helpful. When we needed small notes and the banks were closed, he provided us with Rp 200,000 in change from his till. When he learned that Helen used to give out small presents to village children, he contributed items like toothbrushes from his stock.

You cannot go to a Timorese village and come back empty-handed. People very much expect you to buy some of their handycraft, especially traditional woven cloth. They come in many sizes, from scarfs to blankets. Special guests are usually presented with a scarf draped over their shoulders.
What to buy: If you want e hundred percent hand-made traditional blanket of scarf, go for the coarser less colourful stuff. The more finely detailed and multicoloured patterns are made with factory-made thread. Whereas handmade thread is coarser and the choice of colours more limited because only natural dyes are used.
