    floating market kuin (c) ukirsari

these are nice floating markets where the sellers in canoes gather around and sell many kinds of fruits, veggies, meals and snacks. if you're interesting just order and pull up the canoe beside the seller's.

banjarmasin has 2 main rivers; martapura and barito which used as trade places among the locals as floating markets. enjoy the local scene in early morning by the rivers while awaiting the sunrise with a cup of tea or coffee. just order from a boat who offers delicacies.

    the people...

    lets pose

The people here are the largest attraction.
    So open , happy...

Totally different from european culture is that these people love to pose for pictures. It is sort of an honor.

A small hint : it might be useful not to where your camera visible. They seem to be realy dissapointed when you don't want to take a picture of them.

Lontong : If you look behind these girls you can spot a whole shelf of lontongs. Careful woven leaves filled with rice and cooked for a few houres...

    boat island

The day we rented a boat to go to the floating marked , we also stopped by an island where 500 families lived.
The major activity of the island was building boats.

A boat lasts about 7 till 10 years- depends on which wood was used - before it fades away.
Even the nails are made of wood. Iron wood. They also use this wood for the piles of the houses.

    A boat cost arround 2.500 000 ir.

A budget travel tip...completely for free.

Since kalimantan is right under the equator , sunsets happen very fast.
Another thing is that the evening comes very early.

    Having breakfast.....a different way...

    breakfast boat

Do you remember , your childhood days? Going to the fair and fishing for little ducks?

Well your going to need that skills now.

If you rent a boat to go to the floating marked I recommand you have breakfast as well at the marked.

First you let your captain get really close to the boat of the restaurantman. Then you get a stick with a nail in it so you can pick your breakfast.

    Whats for breakky?
    -boiled eggs
    -different sorts of Indonesian doughnuts
    -baked banana
-lontong (rice wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked for several houres so it becomes sort of a ricebal. Can be perked up with some nuts ...)
-some really tasty sweet things. (the green things in a plastic wrap)
    -a sort of pretzel
    -some really delicious coffee

Just a little story I wanted to ad.
At the other side of the boat , a boat with like 12 little girls came for breakfast. As we had to pay our bill it turned out to be 13.500 IR.
( Very cheap - we had 4 coffee , 26 pieces , and one lunchwrap)
They all where looking over the restaurantboat at us to see who had eaten such a large amout of sweeterys.....and the boatsman pointed at me........

    chinese temple

Just to make sure our trip had an happy ending we paid visits to every possible religion in the city...

So we did make an offer at this chinese temple. This is a nice one. But the other one , more located in the center is nicer...

Don't worry to wander arround. These people are verry proud about the building and are happy that you are interested and taking pictures...
