Addressed as the most popular food among Torajans delicacies. Mostly using pork, but you can order with chicken meat. Pa'piong is so called 'Ayam masak di buluh' in Indonesia lingo. It's mixed meat and coconut and veggie then put into bambo shell and smoked over a low flame within hours. Served with white or black rice.
This kind of black meat a'la Torajan can used chicken meat, pork or gold fish. Using tamarind and several spices then added with something black spice called 'keluak' in my lingo [Javanese] and they're said it's 'tamressan' something :) Served hot with black or white steamed rice.
Both Mart's Cafe and Restoran Mambo offer good simple dishes, both Indonesian and Western at decent prices. Both are clean and offer good service. But the 'fun' thing about them is that they are the meeting place of many guides. Initially this might be a hassle, but by day 2 it doesn't matter - as soon as they know you are organised, they don't hassle you. The guides get together for a beer (and are very happy if you buy them one as their funds are limited) and out comes the guitar and the spoons and anything else that plays a beat. They sing traditional Torajan songs and some old western songs. I would recommend either place - meals at both including several beers and a few for the guides was between 10 and 15 $. Another good restaurant, a little more upmarket, is Wae Rumbung, about 1.5km south of Rantepeo next to Hotel Pondok Toraja Torsino.
Favorite Dish: I didn't try this one but one of my travelling companions did - pa'piong - which is meat stuffed into bamboo tubes with coconut and vegetables and very slowly cooked over a fire. Needs to be ordered in advance. My friend had this on Christmas Day at Hotel Pondok Toraja Torsino. He chose buffalo as the meat and said it was very tender and added spices and coconut with the vegetables - delicious. See picture!
Mart's cafe is a good value restaurant in Rantepao. You can enjoy a good dinner for reasonable price.
The atmosphere at night is superb. Normally Rosito, Yusuff and other Rantepao boys sing and play the guitar at nights, and it's a wonderful option to hang out if you don't like go to bed early.
Favorite Dish: The menu has a lot of different dishes (local, western, chinese and others).
You can taste the buffalo steak or brochettes. This meat can be a little hard but it's very tasty.
You can also eat pa'piong (if you still haven't been in a funeral or wedding), fish, guacamole, nasi goreng, or mia goreng, and much more
The chef prepares each dish with such dedication that each dish comes out so pleasing to one's palatte. You could also tell him your particular taste or that if you're suffering from some ailment, he will specially cook the dish that will be healthy for you. But as he puts in much effort in dishing out each meal, do order your meal at least an hour in advance! But they are definitely worth the wait!
Just sipping a cup of famous ToRAJAN COFFEE in cool freash mountain air while seeing the scenery of RANTE PAO towncity .
