In Palembang they knew about the Chinese admiral Cheng Ho, a Muslim eunuch who made seven great maritime travels during the XV century. Even one of the mosques in Palembang was named after him (Muhammad Cheng Ho Mosque), and is to be found in the skirts of Palembang, which I visited by means of a rickshaw.

    The bridges

I am not really sure what is the attraction of Palembang. But, most of talk about Palembang will be on the bridges that across the famous river, Musi. The river of Musi is the 'heart' of the people in Palembang. Many daily activities as bathing, washing, fishing and many more that contribute to water pollution happened from long time ago. The government make a movement to reserve the water and its environment, and the year 2007 they campaign for Visit Musi! For those who like a cultural experience will like to see the river and observe the living surround it.

Note: the pictures I share here might not satisfying enough. I use my low-res handphone camera.

    Benteng Kuto Besak by ukirsari

This fort also known as the center of Palembang Darussalam Sultanate. The idea to buid this fort appears by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I [1724 – 1758] and continued by Sultan Mahmud Bahauddin [1776 – 1803]. Build since 1780 with unfamiliar design, the Chinese architects used limestone as the cement. These limestones taken from the hinterland of Sungai Ogan [Ogan River –see the details at my Danau Ranau page]. Inaugurated at February 21, 1797.

Houses by the river Palembang by ukirsari

As people who have a giant river, the Palembangs also build houses at the riverbank. This views remind me with houses by the klongs at Bangkok. Nice scenery and we can see the floating markets here around mid-day.
