We had no tight schedule about when moving one and where figuring out some options...

We went for information to VISTA EXPRESS , tours and travels to gather information. This little office is in menteng , not far from the cultural center TIM.
And to our surprice an aiplane ticket to Yogyakarta here with Garuda was about 7 times cheaper then when we would order it in Belgium....

A girl will help you out in perfect English. 'Express' wasn't a lie either , in less then 15 minutes we had our ticket.Give it a shot. Maybe a reason for you to stay in Jakarta first one nigfht.

Last time we visited Indonesia we arrived with Garuda.
    The national airline companie.
I must say that the domestic flights are in much nicer airplanes and more luxurious.

Ofcourse we where too early in the airport. Als those warnings about traffic jam. They where not prepared to have our luggage checked in , but taking an early flight. NO PROBLEM.

We paid 37 euro for the flight to Jogyakarta...booked at Vista express.

This is one of the most competitive sector with many airlines offering their services.

Full service airlines include: Singapore Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Airlines, Thai Airways, Air India, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Philippines Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa & KLM. (Adam Air is set to join the crowded scene by end Oct 2005)

    Budget airline: Valuair

It is one situation that you may actually get a cheaper ticket on a full service airline than on a budget airline!

    TRAVEL

HOW TO GET THERE - Jakarta has disappeared from travel brochures. However, you can fly QANTAS or SINGAPORE AIRLINES (and many other airlines) from London to Jakarta via Singapore. British Airways take you as far as Singapore where you switch airlines to Qantas. Avoid Garuda. Note that some airlines take very indirect routes.

Jakarta airport is modern. BLUEBIRD taxis are generally OK.
(Some taxi drivers have kidnapped passengers).
HOW TO GET AROUND - the best way to get around is with a Falkplan street atlas and a taxi rented from Bluebird taxis.
You should try OJEKS (motorcycle taxis) or BAJAJ (3 wheel taxis) - good at nipping in and out of traffic.

Jakarta’s traffic, however, has areputation of being one of the worst in Asia, or in the world for that matter. Therefore, and in order not to loose too much time in traffic, it’s important that you choose your hotel wisely.
The most congested part of Jakarta is the part north of its center from, let’s say, the National Monument all the way up to the coastline (Ancol) area. Unless you have to be there for business reasons, better to avoid taking a hotel in this part of the city. The hotels in central Jakarta have quick and easy access to many point of interest and also the toll road, which leads to The Jagorawi toll road, to Bogor area, and also connects well to the Jakarta–Merak toll road.
Rush hours should be avoided. Jakarta’s morning rush hour starts at about 7 am and goes on until about 10am. The afternoon rush hour can start as early as 4 o’clock in the afternoon and can last until as late as 7pm.

  • From the USA, I took flight from SFO (San Francisco International Airport) via Korean Airlines. They have flight that goes to Indonesia.
    from Seoul, Korea Inchon International
Airport. From Seoul, Korean Air has direct flight to Jakarta, Indonesia that takes about 5-1/2 hours.

Another way is to Take China Airlines with stop in Taiwan, then direct flight to Jakarta, Indonesia.
(from SFO) Either route used will take maximum 17 hours to do. Other Airlines that have flights to Indonesia include Singapore Air, Malaysian Air, Japan Air (via Tokyo or Osaka) ,Cathay Pacific,
and Garuda. There are others airlines too that have flights to Indonesia, these are ones I came across. When arriving to Jakarta, name of the Airport is Soekarno-Hata International or 'CGK.'

  • When you arrive to Jakarta by air flight, the Airport name is Soekarno-Hatta (CGK ) International Airport. This is the main airport into Indonesia.
It also happens to be one of the worst Airports I have ever been to. Reminds me of Airport scenes in the movie 'The Year of Living Dangerously' staring Mel Gibson. Outside parking and transportation (taxis/buses/shuttles) is tolerable. Indonesia has tropical/warm weather and as soon as you get off plane, you can feel the heat. No air conditioning or climate control at this airport? Everytime I go to this airport I just have bad time going through customs and checking in for departure flights.

Definately, the best way to get to Jakarta is by Singapore Airlines.

I believe they have a public transportation system, but I did not take advantage of it so can't help you there.

One thing I noticed that was intriguing was the 'taxi ferry.' Guys on small motorcycles will zip you through the heavy traffic for a relatively small price. I didn't take advantage of that either. Lucky me, I had friends with private cars and drivers to drive us where ever we wanted to go, No stress during rush hour (almost 24 hours a day) and very good air-con. Lovely.

  • For a tourist, better to take a taxi. Convenient, faster, safer, and quite cheap. First flag only cost you Rp 3,000 or 3 cents USD!

Most major airlines fly in to Jakarta. You can get some pretty good deals too since not many people are heading this way lately.

Whatever it is... and no matter how cheap your plane ticket is going to cost, DON'T ever take GARUDA Indonesian Airlines. They have too many plane crashes/ mishaps within this decade that it is getting to be a little alarming.

So far, I've taken KLM Dutch Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific (HK) Airlines, Lufthansa (German) Airlines and SAS (Scandinavian) Airlines to Indonesia. All of the above are great airlines and you can get some good deals from them too. Do check with your local travel agent for more details.

Cabs are really inexpensive here. But I've heard of cab drivers over-charging some of my colleagues though! So, be extra careful and insist that they (cab drivers) use the meter.

Outside rush hour, a cab from the Airport (popularly known as Cengkareng) takes about 40 minutes to reach the city center. The queue for cabs at the airport can be quite daunting at times. Oh well.

Just remember to use the always-reliable Bluebird Taxis. They have a counter inside the Airport.

IF you'd much rather take a cosy limousine, the same taxi counter inside the Airport also offers this exclusive and much more expensive Silver Bird Taxis & Golden Bird Limousines service.
