Jakarta's locals by latte18 Indonesians are generally friendly people. They're kind and unassuming to most foreigners, especially Westerners (affectionately dubbed "bule" by most Indonesians). But there are some NO NOs that cannot be done in front of an Indonesian., so if you want to get along well with Indonesians during your visit here, here are some pointers: - Always use your right hand when shaking other people's hand or offering something. Also it's generally required to shake hands (with your right hand) if you're being introduced to someone. - Eating with your bare hands is a norm here. But again only use your right hand to take your food. Do not begin eating when the host hasn't started yet. - Indonesians are very easy going. People expect you to be patient and polite. Lose your cool and you'll not get on too good with locals - Touching someone's head, especially someone older, is a big NO NO. - Despite being the country with the largest muslim population, the Islam practiced here is very moderate thus drinking at bars and clubs is one of locals' favorite pastimes in Jakarta. But, exercise your common sense in this situation and don't exhibit rude behaviors in front of Indonesians. After all, we're still Easterners :) Leave a Comment

Strangers in the night. by belgianchocolate Ok , this is also one of my fondest memories... The day after the congress ended all the delegations of the different BOS countries (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation) where invited at the house of the former minister of forestry.( a really nice man) Of course there was a singer and someone to play the keyboard...and of course there where lots of books with songs. All of them where from before I was born. I can assure you... A little bird wispered to me that it would be impolite not to sing when your invited . So I did sing a bit of Frank Sinatra (what could I do)... Anyway ,the atmosphere was great , the wife of the ex-minister was a great cook. A very nice last night. Leave a Comment

Many of you certainly have watched this 2009 movie: Slumdog millionaire. It is a nice optimistic story, told with lots of humour and sensitivity, but is further from real life than VT from real travel! Well, nothing to laugh or no romantics here; but also no tourist voyeurism, unsound mind, no sordid realism, just another side of life. . . . Be prepared for some views many people would find unpleasant, not necessary touristy; on the pictures here, people are far, just wanted to show some hidden side, when you walk around in North Jakarta. On the first picture, is the fish market main hall, seen from a watchtower belonging to the Maritime museum; on the other pictures are other views of the area, and the last one has been taken from a very touristy place.

Indonesians are very polite people. Whenver you meet someone older than you or is higher in seniority level, you need to address the men as "Pak" and the women as "Bu" as a sign of respect. Even if you taking a cab or in a restaurant, address them accordingly.

Basically, poeple in Jakarta are really friendly. they will try to help you, especially if you are foreigner. They will refer you as 'bule', don't get offended, because it's just a slang term to call a caucasian or foreigner. You can just go and ask anyone on the street, not to those street vendors though, coz they wouldn't be able to understand,.... and they will try their best to explain,... with some english, some indonesian, some body language,... by ukirsari Uniques lingo! Normally we use bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian lingo), but in Jakarta, Betawi dialect and bahasa gaul (slank lingo) involved to the standar Indonesian all-together. It makes something new and different in hearing and sometimes the meaning. Here I enclosed several 'bahasa gaul' which used daily. I (English): saya (Indonesian) : gue, aku, aye, akika (bahasa gaul) You: anda: kamu, elu, ente Good morning: selamat pagi: 'met pagi Good evening: selamat malam: 'met malam Nice to meet you: senang berjumpa dengan anda: hai 'bro! Take care: hati-hati: titi deejay (acronym from 'hati-hati di jalan') See you: sampai jumpa: ketemu lagi yaw Trully sorry if I made mistake: maaf bila saya berbuat kesalahan: kalo ade saleh maapin aye I'm sorry: maafkan saya: maapin aye Finish: sudah, selesai: sutra, kelar 'bo Yes: ya: iye, yo-i No: tidak: nggak, gak, enggak (further, you can ask me anytime :D) Leave a Comment

Selamat pagi = good morning Apa kabar = how do you do Terima kasih = thank you Do not hug or kiss, especially to the opposite sex. For some moslems women, touching the opposite sex is forbidden, so do not feel offended. Head is the most important parts of the body, and for most Indonesian, touching the head is the sign of unpoliteness and rude. Leave a Comment

Women beware, the men will stare at you openly and will not be ashamed even if you let them know that you are not pleased that they are looking! So dress modestly or do not be surprised if you are stared at. Leave a Comment

The most amusing part of living anywhere that is foreign to you, are the 'misunderstandings' created by language barriers. One of my colleagues who was learning to speak Indonesian felt that one of our female co-workers had failed to convey the bad news to the boss ina meeting. He called her a 'chicken' (in the English slang sense of coward) but used the Indonesian word for chicken ('ayam'). He was surprised by her outrage until it was explained to him that the slang meaning of 'ayam' is 'whore.' Leave a Comment
