For those who like spicy taste and one dish meal, try this 'nasi goreng'. Fried rice with sausage, egg and crackers, served hot nearby pedestrian in the night. In the one part of famous Menteng area at the downtown.

Of course nasi goreng, but you can also try Sate Padang and Pecel Lele there. Very delicious!

Jakarta Street Foods are Delight to eat, the most favorit place is Jalan Jaksa (also famos for Bars) Jalan Agus Salim and Jalan Wahid Hasyim in Central Jakarta, there are so many stalls on the side walk serving good quality Local food, the best is Padang Food with verity of so many dishes all so spicy and yummy,

There are so many but what I like Most is Padang Food Nasi Ikan (White Rice and Fried Chicken /Thick Curry) Nasi Ikan (White Rice and Fish Curry) Must Try that. Satay Padand is also among the famous food, as name says it, from padang = spicy, Beef (Sapi), Meat (Kambing) or Chicken (Ayam) BBQ on wooden sticks, so delicious, served with Sambal (Hot Chili sauce)

Average cost of eating at Food stalls and street side restaurants at Jalan Agus Salim is no more then 10,000 IDR (little over a Dollar) Amazing

  • Warteg, short for Warung Tegal, is truly Indonesia's original. For the adventurous, a meal at one of the tens of thousands Jakarta's warteg is a must!

If you think your average McDonald's is fast, then you'll be amazed by the unbeatable speed of wartegs. The food in wartegs is displayed on a glass showcase, if you like what you see, just point them out and the owner will serve it for you.

Although wartegs are geared towards Jakarta's middle and lower class, many affluent Jakartans can also be found eating here and have become part of the rich Jakarta's culture.

Gerobak (carts) * see my travelogues about Gerobak Makanan
Here my favorites makanan gerobak from day into night; bubur ayam (rice porridge with sliced fried chicken, celery, fried soy bean, cakwee, soy bean sauce and shrimp crackers), rujak buah, gado-gado (if you feel very hungry, you can order to added lontong (rice cake) or steamed rice, rujak buah, es buah and sate Padang.

For me, Jakarta is a paradise for culinary experiences. Just need to stepping outside my front door then ‘the kitchen’ will comes to me. It’s called ‘gerobak makanan’ or carts with many kind of meals and selling as home service --door to door, open day and night. Just listen to the sound that they’re announced and you will recognize about the foods. Like ‘ting, ting, ting’ (as the fork or spoon kicking the bowl or wok) it’s for mie goreng (fried noodles), nasi goreng (fried rice), bakso (meatballs with noodles), bubur ayam (chicken porridge), or es campur (fruit mocktail). If the sounds ‘kring, kring, kring’ (from bicycle), it can be siomay (Chinese snack, made from fish and corn starch wrapped in wontons, plus fried or boiled tofu, potato, cabbage and bitter melon and served with peanut sauce, sweet soy sauce and squeeze with lemon) or burger (hotdog and hamburger) or ice cream cones. If the seller say ‘Teeeeee’, it must be sate (satay, diced chicken skewered onto thin bamboo and grilled over fiery charcoals –known as ‘sate ayam’. If made from meat, the name is ‘sate Padang’). Without any kind of sounds, maybe gado-gado (vegetables salad like string beans, spinach, bean sprouts, watercress, cucumber, potato and lettuce with fried tofu, served with spicy peanut sauce), rujak buah (many kinds of Indonesian fruits like star fruits, mango, papaya and kedondong in special sauce made from brown sugar, chilli and salt), asinan buah (just like rujak but the sauce made from water, white sugar, chilli and vinegar), soto (chicken or meat light soup served with steamed rice) or ‘drink gerobak’ (sell many variety of bottled drinks, from mineral water, soft drink with soda like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Mirinda, ‘till tea called ‘teh botol’).

    Please, read furtheron ...
We already had dinner-time and, I don't think this is an appetizing place. I saw a program on TV about the "drinking-of-Cobra-blood", read about it and, was anxious to see it for myself. Cobra blood has long been recognized as a general stimulant and health aid. It is also claimed to be a powerful aphrodisiac.

So we went for Jl. Mangga Besar, off Jl. Hayam Wuruk in North of the city, where is a good night market for Chinese, Indian and Nasi Padang food. Jl. Mangga Besar is a dark avenue for the very dark pleasures of life in too dark hours. Find the warung Puja Sera, a "Cobra-stall", with some snake-cages. I was struck dumb and immediatedly the guys wanted me to lead in and drink some Cobra-blood.

I could convince them I was doing studies and research work about snakes ... mmmh, they put up with something, and when got to close to the cage to take a pic I was pulled back. These animals do spit their venom ... you know.

However, there is one of the specialty restaurants in Jakarta, named "King Cobra". Its main menu attraction is, you guessed it, King Cobra. Btw, the night market is open from 6pm-2am nightly. Prices are from 5$ until very expensive for the King Cobra. And they have fried lizard, kalong/bats and monkeys too ...

The ultimate seafood restaurants in Jakarta. In Muara Karang, all seafood are served 'fresh from the ocean'. The restaurants only have steamed rice with many various of sambal (sauce) plus soft drink. So we have to buy the seafood by our own to the fish market nearby the restaurant, then asking them to cooking.

Sweet and sour (massive) crabs, fried crabs with butter and oyster sauce, grilled prawn and calamari, served with steamed rice and chilli-mango sauce plus belacan sauce.

Open daily for warung indomie and evening 'till late night for pedestrian seafood. For fruits, maybe 24 hours!

How creative Indonesian are, you can find eateries called ‘warung indomie’ (small noodles house) with their special items ‘internet’ (indomie-telur-corned), just instant noodles (which we can make it by ourselves at home, only need added boiled water), but they make it more delicious in serving with vegetables, boiled egg and salted beef. Ready in 5 minutes! They’re also selling toasted bread with various jam.
But, we can also find the ‘serious’ meals on pedestrians. Placed on tents along the streets. We can find Pecel Lele (fried catfish served with vegetables and belacan sauce), Pecel Ayam (catfish changed with chicken), Soto Ayam (chicken soup) and Soto Daging (meat soup). All served with steamed rice. Also sate ayam and sate Padang, fried noodles and Nasi Goreng (fried rice). The best for me in this pedestrian area are seafood! Like massive crabs, prawn or garupa (gurame) in sweet-sour sauce, oyster sauce or a la saos Padang (very spicy!), grilled or fried calamari, ‘till boiled shrimp and oyster serving with pineapple and peanut sauce. Then how if we want a dessert after it? Simple, just visit the tent which selling many kind of fruits on the pedestrians. And you can find fresh Mandarin orange, grapefruits, apple, mango, plus local fruits!

  • The best restaurants in Jakarta are the ones that in the sides of the streets. I love Soto Madura (beef soup with yellow spices) in Jalan Roxi and Lamb Satay in Jalan Gereja Ayam, Central Jakarta (in the evening)
Price can be found best in the small restaurants on the sides of the streets. However, please be sure that you bring diarrhea medicines if you are not used to low quality controlled food. But Indonesian people used to say, those food are the best.

Satay (roasted meats on the sticks, eaten with peanuts seasonings), Soto (variety of soups), Tongseng (lambs soup, hot and spicy), chicken porridge, and nasi uduk (rice cooked with coconut milk).

  • You actually have to shop for the sea food yourself!
Wide selection of fish, shrimps, squid and all kind of sea food are available fresh on the traditional market. After shopping you can go to the nearest small restaurants to have them cooked anyway you like.
Oh.. wear slippers and short or capri pants. The market is wet and smelly. Then at the restaurants there are lot of smokes. Better visit is at night

Ooo... oo... there's so many! In Jakarta you can get all kinds of international cuisine, but for VT, I think it's best if I recommend Jakartans' hang-outs with traditional fares.

I really like all dirt-cheap foods sold in a little stall off of the street. It's cheap and most of the time.. da best!

For Bakmi Bakso I would still refer to my childhood's fave: the seller on Jalan Teuku Umar, right accross the old Immigration Office (Teuku Umar #1). I've been going to this place for 25 years!!! It's still the best!
For a refreshing drink try 'Es Teler 77' or 'Es Teler Lapangan Tembak' these restaurants can be found easily in major malls and all over Jakarta.
'WARTEG'-- a stall oferring rice and a variety Indonesian side dishes' is another must try for visitors. I love Warteg on Jalan Daha (behind 82 High School) and on Jalan Barito. I also love almost every food each seller sells behind the the Pondok Indah hospital.
Try the famous 'Roti Bakar Edi' selling wonderful grilled 'milk' sandwich on Jalan Daksa and don't miss the Goat Fried Rice Bakti on Jalan Senopati is still the best for me. Another personal fave is 'Soto Ma'aruf' whose original restaurant is in Taman Ismail Marzuki complex in Central Jakarta. For seafood lovers, Muara Angke is a must... you can either choose your own (sometimes still alive) fish or let the restaurant workers do it for you; and then they would grill your seafood right there, in front of you. Hmmmmm..... just don't wear anything too nice or fancy... it's a bit wet around the fish market.
