The best restaurants in Jakarta are the ones that in the sides of the streets. I love Soto Madura (beef soup with yellow spices) in Jalan Roxi and Lamb Satay in Jalan Gereja Ayam, Central Jakarta (in the evening)
Price can be found best in the small restaurants on the sides of the streets. However, please be sure that you bring diarrhea medicines if you are not used to low quality controlled food. But Indonesian people used to say, those food are the best.

Favorite Dish: Satay (roasted meats on the sticks, eaten with peanuts seasonings), Soto (variety of soups), Tongseng (lambs soup, hot and spicy), chicken porridge, and nasi uduk (rice cooked with coconut milk).

You actually have to shop for the sea food yourself!
Wide selection of fish, shrimps, squid and all kind of sea food are available fresh on the traditional market. After shopping you can go to the nearest small restaurants to have them cooked anyway you like.
Oh.. wear slippers and short or capri pants. The market is wet and smelly. Then at the restaurants there are lot of smokes. Better visit is at night

Favorite Dish: Sea Food - all kind

Ooo... oo... there's so many! In Jakarta you can get all kinds of international cuisine, but for VT, I think it's best if I recommend Jakartans' hang-outs with traditional fares.

I really like all dirt-cheap foods sold in a little stall off of the street. It's cheap and most of the time.. da best!

Favorite Dish: For Bakmi Bakso I would still refer to my childhood's fave: the seller on Jalan Teuku Umar, right accross the old Immigration Office (Teuku Umar #1). I've been going to this place for 25 years!!! It's still the best!
For a refreshing drink try 'Es Teler 77' or 'Es Teler Lapangan Tembak' these restaurants can be found easily in major malls and all over Jakarta.
'WARTEG'-- a stall oferring rice and a variety Indonesian side dishes' is another must try for visitors. I love Warteg on Jalan Daha (behind 82 High School) and on Jalan Barito. I also love almost every food each seller sells behind the the Pondok Indah hospital.
Try the famous 'Roti Bakar Edi' selling wonderful grilled 'milk' sandwich on Jalan Daksa and don't miss the Goat Fried Rice Bakti on Jalan Senopati is still the best for me. Another personal fave is 'Soto Ma'aruf' whose original restaurant is in Taman Ismail Marzuki complex in Central Jakarta. For seafood lovers, Muara Angke is a must... you can either choose your own (sometimes still alive) fish or let the restaurant workers do it for you; and then they would grill your seafood right there, in front of you. Hmmmmm..... just don't wear anything too nice or fancy... it's a bit wet around the fish market.

THIS is not a restaurant. Since this collum heading with restaurant not Food And Beverages, so , I insert this pic as a part of restaurant. The roadside food vendor are easily can be seen through out Indonesia. To my taste, the Bakso, Mee Goreng and Nasi Goreng are very tasteful and cheap too.
For your info, this food is a people food.....up to 0200 am you still can get this vendor at the corner of every street in Indonesia.

  • Street Food: Best pork sate in the world....

by Juggernutt Written Jun 23, 2003

The street restaurant is in Pecenongan.
The GREATEST sates in the world. I kid you not.
When you get there you can ask around where the satay restaurant is. Or look for the smokiest spots...most likely it's the sate grill.

The menu is clear and simple..they have all kind of grilled meats as long as it's pork.
The best is the special got to try it to believe.
Side dish besides white rice is a baikut. A soup with salty cabbage and porkribs.

But if it's to much meat for you...don't worry. All the streetrestaurants don't mind it if you order from the other places and they will bring it over. I know they have an excellent seafood restaurant here.

Not sure if it's a good thing, but I heard that they either relocated to a foodcourt in a mall or there are 2 establishments.

All I can go for it. One of the TOP dining experiences in the World. Foodwise that is..because place and scenery is severey below par.

    Favorite Dish: Sate.
They have regular pork sate. But the best is the special meats.
    Intestines, liver and even skin.
    Truly delicious.

The Baikut is also reputed to be one of the best.

Also a big plus that you can order from the other streetrestaurants.
