The other name of the museum are Gedung Arca and Museum Gajah, It was called Gedung Gajah on account of the bronze elephant statue in the front yard donated by King Chulalongkorn from Thailand in 1871. It was also called Gedung Arca because a great variety of statues from different periods are on display in the house

    National Museum Courtyard

The Museum Nasional in Jakarta houses a very comprehensive collection of cultural artefacts from all over the vast Indonesian archipeligo. It offers a great introduction to the various provinces for those planning future trips throughout Indonesia. The collection of sculptures from Indonesia's Hindu and Buddhist eras is particularly impressive, and the sculpture garden in the courtyard is quite picturesque (see photo).

The National Museum or the "Museum Gajah" is a good point to get an short or longer overview about old and recent history in Indonesia.
Very central place near Monas, and good to reach with Transjakarta Bus.
A friend recommended it to see the museum and so we were on sunday morning so two hours there- but had finished it by the high noon heat!

Inside are some nice places to sit and rest, so near the nice Bidadari of Java with the traditionel Javanese hairdo, see the photo.
We found her, the "ARCA PANCURAN", this little nice fountain water sculpture, at the inner courtyard of the museum.
It remembers me a little on the sculptures of the "river godness of Ganga" in India.

Shure she was once a fountain sculpture in an nice garden at an old Javanese House or Temple, -
but so much time, so much centuries ago...

I regretted that I didn't allocate more time to explore this museum. It is, after all, the National Museum of Indonesia. There are so much to see in this place which was filled with collections not only from Indonesia but from the Thai's and the Chinese.

    Entrance fee is Rp750.

Go to National Museum (Elephant museum because in front of the museum, there is a statue of Elephant)

Go to the Presidential Palace, just in front of the museum.

And don't forget to visit Fatahillah Museum. There is a big cannon in front of it. If you have tired while visiting it, just next to it, there is a Batavia cafe, serving the great coffee of Indonesia.

Near there, there is a Shadow Puppet Museum (Museum Wayang). Wayang is the most popular show in Indonesia. In this museum, there is a tomb of one of the famous Governor General in the Dutch colonialization Period, J.P. Coen.
Go to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, and take the cable car, and you can see the whole Indonesia archipelago. You can also visit the various Indonesian culture from 27 provinces in Indonesia, includes paintings, sculptures and so on.

Make sure that you visit Pasar Seni (Art Market) in Ancol. Ancol is located in North Jakarta, just near the Java Sea. This Art Market has the most variations of Indonesia's culture and things for souvenirs.

The National Museum has an impressive collection of art from throughout Indonesia. I was impressed with their sculpture garden, which contained many beautiful Hindu sculptures.
