    Enjoying Jakarta

by sukalejong Written Oct 17, 2010

    Hi,

If you like history, Old City of Jakarta might interest you. As well as National Museum. Moreover, right now the museum held an exhibition of Indonesian traditional music instruments.
You can go to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah if you want to see Indonesian diversity cultures. And in there you can also enjoying water theme park.
Another theme park is situated at Ancol Bay area.
While shopping spots are disperse in Jakarta. Manggadua and Tanahabang are good places to shop many things in reasonable price. And for luxury shopping center you can come to Plaza Indonesia or Senayan City.
Jakarta is safe to be explored by bus and public transportation in day time, as long as you don't attract people with your expensive belonging. Use Transjakarta bus for getting around. In the late night use taxi, Blue Bird and Express are the two advisable taxi company.
For accommodation, hotels in Jalan Jaksa are known for their cheap fare.
    I hope you enjoy Jakarta.

    Muara Karang Fish Market

    by aj03 Written Jul 10, 2008

If you done visiting downtown. You can go to Muara Karang Fish market located in North Jakarta. You better go in the afternoon or diner time when fresh fish just unloading from the boat. It is interesting busy main fish market in town. You better use short and sandals since it is wet and often flooding surface, it is not the most clean and hygienic place on earth, not to mention fish smell. Go watch fish trading and you can always buy fish or shrimps or anything you like and bring your fish to local barbeque restaurant near by fish market. There are more than dozens, but I always go to the upfront fish restaurant called Sedap Malam, it is easy to find from the parking place. They have awesome mango chilly and other various chilly made from peanut, soy-bean and tomatoes and fresh chili, shrimp paste.

The national monuments is one of Jakarta's landmark. You could take an elevator in the monument to have a bird-eye view of Jakarta. The elevator could take 11 people, but there is one man operate it, sit in an office-chair that made a quite big different on the capacity. Please be aware that on weekend or public holiday, the queque is long. On the summit, there is no place to sit down, people could only be able to stand to enjoy the view.

A museum where history showed in dioramatic scene is available on the underground level.

This open-air museum was a cemetery. Many years ago, the government ask the inheritance of the death to move their relatives remains, keep the tombstone and publish this place as a museum. But then, not of all remains was able to be removed, some are still lies there.

The cemetery particularly was for the Dutch. No wonder, there are lots of angel statue, bible-like, church-like tombstone other that the big tombstone with "Here Lies..." on it. The tombstone of Mr. Roll, the founder of Stovia the first medicine school in Indonesia lies here. There were also the tombstones of some famous pastors here. Two of Indonesian tombs was here ~~Gie, the activites and Miss Ribut, the singer.

This park-cemetery-museum usually a great location for photographer and models to wary around :)

A walking distance from Maritime Museum is the Menara Syahbandar. This is a five-storey tower, was built at about the same time with the Maritime Museum. From the windows of the tower, the harbour-master could see the harbour and make necessary arrangement for enter-exit of the ships.

Now, the tower is a part of the maritime museum. On its wall hang a lot of pictures of the harbour and ships from the old days.

Some cannon was kept and displayed at the front yards of the tower.

Sunda Kelapa is an old harbour in south Jakarta, it is not using commercially anymore. But it is worth to go there and enjoy the hot sea air, while seeing how the capital city was long time ago.

If you want to cross to the thousand island (pulau seribu), some boat service also available here.

The museum was a three-storey warehouse used to store spices. Long long time ago, the spices was exported from Batavia to another countries, mostly to Netherlands. It was build half-half bricks and woods. The woods were those big-strong ones and still good many years ago after it built, till now. I do amazed to see the size of the woods. The nature of old-building, an old european style, also give a back-to-batavia feeling

The first storey display many collection of ships/ex-ships and its equipments, such as anchors, wheels, lights and lamps, barrells and sails. The second storey displayed collection of ceramics, marine uniforms, paintings, photos and some ocean creatures.

There are three similar building in the complex, but only one of them use for museum. The other two not well maintained.

Many windows on the building Traditional boat decorated nicely Traditional boat from east Indonesia Big old wood and new ceramic tile A display inside the museum

Massage, spa, reflexology etc are part of the lifestyle of the people living at Jakarta and you will see lots of massage parlours, spa, reflexology centres all over Jakarta.

The Wellness Reflexology is a chain of reflexology and massage centres at Jakarta which offer very good service in a very good environment. There is a branch located along Jalan Pluit Putra Raya (see contact below) which offers 1.5 hours of massage at only 30,000 ruppiahs during happy hours (10am to 2pm) and about 45,000 ruppiahs otherwise (which is considered very cheap).

My wife and I tried out the massage and it was very good, in fact we had 2 hours of massage for 30,000 ruppiahs each person!

The Phylosophy of Schmutzer Primates Center:
We endeavor to provide the best possible care for the primates and the other animals in our center. We want to teach people concern and respect to primates by showing them in as much as possible natural surroundings. Those animals that can , will goback to the wild, not remain here as permanent zoo collection. Animals that stay here permanently are those that have no other place to go.
We want to open people's eyes and heart by letting them learn by experience. We want to demonstrate that learning can be fun. We want to show our guests new viewpoints and to explore a beautiful world different from the crowded and polluted city life. We also want to show that discipline makes life better for all of us. From cleanliness to Queuing, from security to management, we all benefit. We want people to learn that humans cannot life alone and that all plants and animals have their role to play, and that we all are interdependent. And finally we want you to be amazed at nature's beauty and become part of movement to save our natural heritage
