I say this because crossing traffic by foot is incredibly daring and risky. Those that are familiar the old Atari video game of FROGGER will know, but crossing it is just like so. Jaywalking is common. I once managed to cross to the other side to do a little shopping and dining. On the way back, the traffic was just so bad that I decided to take a taxi just to get to the other side. lolSilly but it worked, I was just being safe than sorry.

To play safe, it is better to get yourself registered with your country's embassy or high commission in Jakarta when you are there. This is because the situation can change very quickly and you may need to get advise from you embassy on what is the safest option for you.
There are frequent traffic jams especially during peak hours, and traffic can sometimes come to a stand-still.
Always travel in groups or have some locals guide you when you are in Jakarta. The situation there can be unstable, and there is a lot of poverty so people may resort to stealing & kidnapping.
For getting around the city, it is recommended to take the Bluebird or Silverbird taxi. They have meters and are generally more reliable.
Be careful when crossing the roads. The traffic is usually very heavy and chaotic, and the vehicles generally do not stop at the zebra crossings according to my experience.
