  • OK, two other things we did while in Bali were also unique was to visit a monkey forest (with temple in the forest) and the monkies will come and sit on your shoulder. However they are very precocious and so will steal hats, glasses or anything not firmly attached to you and run off with it. Fortunately the guides are good at retreiving.

The other place were the local temples, in particular Tanah Lot (sea Temple) and an Elephant temple (in a cave).

  • One of my mates is a photojournalist from Austria. We ended up planning activities around his photo shoots, which were grand because we covered just about every inch of Bali and Lambok. The temples were my personal favourites.
Like I said before, Bali is magical, and the temples are such a part of these peoples lives, you couldn't help taking that spirituality home with you! Even if yer 'reality' only allowed you to stay that peaceful for a few days after!

    Diving the reefs

  • Outside Manado lies Bunaken marine nationalpark. This area are no less than the paradise itself for snorklers and scubadivers. Here are a countless number of corallspecies, at least 2700 fishspecies. Then there is gigantclams, nudibranches, lobsters...! All kinds of creatures you can expect to find in the tropical region. Here is also a selection of reptiles and mammals to be seen, included dolphins, bigger whales and the dugong feeding in the shallow grassfields. Snorkeling outside the lodges are a truly revarding experience. You don’t have to leave the surface to see a myriad of fishspecies, but it certainly pays off to be able to penetrate at least six meters below the surface. At the drop off, where the coralwall plunges almost vertically into the deep, you may encounter walls of moving fishes, with nothing fixed to look at, you may even be a little dizzy. Snorkeling here will certainly wake up your curiosity, but don’t touch anything, unless you know exactly what you are dealing with. Here is a variety of creature able to inflict very unplesant bites or stings. However, most will never attack unless provoked. This also applies to the blue and black, or blue and white seasnakes. Those are very venomous, but are extremely peacefull. I could follow them for as long as i wanted when they searched for prey, they never looked at me. Snorkeling the mangroves are less spectacular, but at high tide, the only possible time to do it properly, you will see a variety of strange small fishes. In this mangrovebelt you some places get a strange feeling of swimming in an elaborate aquarium as you crawl among the treerots. Fins often gets useless in the mangrove. If you are after the big game like forexample sharks go scubadiving. You don’t need to bee a divingexpert to dive here, here are divingplaces for several levels of experience. However, beeing used to deal with currents are a great advantage, it was in the exposed areas i saw most.

  • This city is the capital of West Java Province. Bandung is known for its natural beauties, historical architectures, and the shopping paradise (it's known as the center of textile, shoes, bags and jeans industry).

  • This is well worth the trip. You can do a variety of things here. The safari journey is great. All the restaurants there are fabulous. The restaurant opposite the lions is really good. The kids waterpark is fantastic espcially if you have little ones.

Travel up on the island of...

  • Travel up on the island of Bali to the volcanic Mt. Batur. Apparantly it erupted as late as in the 60's killing 1000 - 2000 people and making a wasteland of several towns and villages on the east side. Driving down into 'the crater' you drive through a lava landscape that makes you feel like your'e on the moon. In the center there's a natural hot spa and not so natural ones.
If you want a romantic hideaway you can travel over Lombok and further on to the Gili Islands. There is three of them. The biggest Gili Travangan is the party island. I don't remember the name of the one in the middle, but the smallest one is Gili Air. You walk around it in approx. 45 min. There are no motordriven vehicles -you walk or rent a horse and carriage at a horrible price. They cheat you no matter what... Exexpt for Hotel Gili Air ( which is really small) there are only small bungalows for rent. With squat toilets (if any) and electricity 'til about 21 - 2200. Still it is really a charming and romantic place. There is some really great snorkelling to do there. Go out with a local guy and his boat and he will show you some great spots - you can even see giant turtles, but beware and don't touch - they are protected.
Bali is Hindu unlike most of the other Indonesian islands which are Muslim. Check out the wonderful temples and be sure to catch some traditional dancing. Though it might be touristy, it is worth spending an evening seeing a show.

  • Visiting Mt. Bromo in East Java.
Visiting Bromo was one of the most interesting experiences in all my travels. The scenery is absolutely spectatular. Mt. Bromo is an active volcano that is part of a larger complex of volcanos. The way to visit it is to spend the night in a lodge on or near the volcano, get up at 3 AM and trek or pony ride to the Bromo crater to watch the sun rise. After that you can hike or take a jeep up to nearby higher elevations for really spectacular vistas of the area.

  • Directions: Mt. Bromo is two hours due south of Surabaya, Java. There are various lodges on the side of the Bromo volcano complex. Book with them and they will arrange Surabaya airport pickup.
