About 17 km from Yogyakarta, Prambanan, the greatest Hinduist temple in Indonesia, was built over there. It was constucted in around 9 B.C. but was not as lucky as Borobudur since most of the 224 buildings were destroyed by earthquake and volcano explosion. At present, only 7 to 8 buildings were left. It is also a great architecture in the history of Indonesia.
Borobudor is one of the largest Buddhist monuments in South East Asia. It is about 50 km from Yogya.The first sight of this monument is awe-inspiring. As you climb the stairs and move up the monument a kind of hush seems to fall around you. Even though there were many people it seemed a haven of peace.
The Gamelan orchestra with gongs, flutes, strings and drums is the music behind the Javanese dance and puppet dramas.It can be soothing, clanging or anywhere in between, but I grew to really like it while I was in Indonesia.The Sundanese gamalan is a very relaxing, mellow form of this music.
Try to find a a wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance. There are a number of venues in Yogyakarta that have shortened versions for tourists. The real thing is very, very long and can last more than a full day.The epic Hindu stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata are the backbone of Indonesian wayang kulit (shadow puppets), wayang golek, (wooden puppets) and wayang orang (dance drama. Full of gods, demons and monkeys, the stories are colorful and exciting.
When in Ubud, or any of the non-resort areas, just get out in the country and walk. You will be rewarded with views of emerald green rice terraces, small local temples, small workshops, a farmer herding his ducks or a flock of herons.
Goa Gajah, the so-called elephant cave is believed to be a hermitage. The cave may date from the 11th century. There is also a bathing place with six statues of women who appear to pouring water into the pool.
Ubud is the artistic centre of Bali. Many artists make their homes here and you can visit many of their galleries. Ubud is also one of the larger centres in the area and has an intersting daily market.
Go to Yogyakarta, the old capital and still home to a Sultan.The cultural as well as geographical heart of Java, Yogyakarta is a city of wayang kulit, batik and ancient monuments. The 'kraton' or palace of Yogyakarta is the home of the sultan and worth a visit. There is a regular schedule of cultural performances.
Bali is sometimes called the Island of the Gods. This name is well earned. The landscape is beautiful the culture is rich and the climate is ideal.There seems to be religious festivals almost every day in Bali.
Normally you would take a colt or tour van from Ngadisari to Bromo and back again. I missed my ride back and enjoyed the steep but beautiful 3 km walk back to Ngadisari. I wouldn't try to walk the other way, though!The fields of the Teggerese were very different from the usual rice fields in Java. They are mostly vegetables and on incredible slopes. I couldn't believe some of the places they had cultivated.
