Sunrise in Bromo - Tengger Caldera

by Dynda

Getting up so early to be able to catch the sunrise in Bromo is absolutely worth it. There are some ways of going to Bromo;Bromo is one of the many active volcanoes in Indonesia that is often visited by people from different parts of the world. We were lucky to be able to see the sunrise and Bromo as the weather was good at that time. When we went there, it was still dark around 4:30 AM, and amazingly there had been many tourists there. I got the feeling they had been there since2 or 3. There are two Bromo viewpoints, as far as I am concerned. The first one is directly in Mt. Bromo itself where you will pass a temple and 2 kms from it you might find steep path of 250 steps leads to the edge of the crater and a precarious meter-wide ledge from where to gaze into the volcano. The second viewpoint is from Mt. Penanjakan, located just north of the caldera. It can be accessed from Tosari...

Mt Merapi (Yogyakarta) or Mt Bromo?

by bkarjee

I have climbed Mt Merapi near Yogyakarta. The climb is not so tough and the view from the top is amazing. I understand Mt Bromo near Surabaya offers much better landscape and the advantage is that you can drive right uptill the top. Ther view from the top is stunning.Between the two active volcanoes, I will prefer Mt Bromo for sightseeing.

Traditional Balinese dancing and storytelling

by lindyz

We watched the Barong & Keris Dance at the village of Batubulan. We stopped here on our drive up to Kintamani. Whilst this performance was colourful and traditional and enjoyable, I couldnt understand a word they were saying! The setting was certainly beautiful, with lush gardens and old stone carvings. The characters and costumes were amazing as well. The Barong play represents an eternal fight between good and evil spirits. Barong is a mythical animal and he represents a good spirit and Rangda who is a mythological monster who represents an evil spirit.

Day trip to Kintamani volcano and Ubud

by lindyz

This was our one and only venture outside of Kuta/Legian. We hired a driver and drove up to the Volcano, which is somewhere near the top of Bali, and we had a stop-off at Ubud Markets on the way back. Breathtaking scenery and a great day out. We also had a few stops at souvenir shops and a wood-carving place. Our guide was called Ketut - its funny how every second man in Bali is called "Ketut"!! Very strange! Our day trip was called "The Arts and Volcano Tour". It was an 8 hour day starting at 8.30am and we paid $55AUD each which included lunch at Kintamani Restaurant. The trip started out with the Barong & Keris Dance show, we then went to Celuk for silver, Mas for wood carvings, then up to the Volcano. After lunch we stopped off at Ubud Markets and then last port of call was the Pura Kehen Temple, which is the 2nd largest temple in Bali.

My favourite - peoplewatch & interract with locals

by lindyz

I simply find it fascinating to watch the world go by, to watch people going about their daily lives, and usually no-one even realises that you are watching them. Also, to talk to the locals, and those we did talk to in Bali were ALL very friendly indeed, we came across not one person who was angry or cranky or nasty. That was a nice feature of Bali indeed

Take a drive through the countryside

by lindyz

We only managed to do one day trip with Ketut, when we drove up to the top of Bali to go to the Volcano. I was amazed at the beautiful country, the jungles, the rice paddies and the school busses packed with children, some hanging off the outside!

Take a look at the crazy building standards

by lindyz

Im sure not much will have changed since we were there 5 years ago. We were quite blown away at the (complete lack of) safety standards when building. No shoes, no hardhats, and absolutely crazy scaffolding!!! There was a lot of roadworks going on in Legian St when we were there, and most of it done manually.Just check out these photos!

Melasti Resort Spa

by lindyz

We only went here 3 times, but all were memorable and heavenly! We had 2 massages and a pedicure here. Massages were $8AUD for half an hour and the pedicure was $15AUD for an hour. Prices were cheaper here than at Bodyworks, and about the average price for massages/pedicures around Kuta/Legian at the time.I would recommend this place, and anyone can go there, it is not just for guests staying at the Resort.
