THE TEMPLES (GENERAL)

by pangtidor

Hundreds of years ago, Hinduism and Buddhism had big influences to Indonesia old kingdoms. They left many things to the present time and the magnificent ones are the temples. Most of the temples are found in Java Island and only a few scattered outside the island. Middle Java will be the best place for you to see the popular temples like Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, and Mendut Temple. You could be interested hearing the superstitious things about the temples like good luck/fortune for touching some parts of the statues or bad luck for lovers to visit a temple before they wed. Separated tips will be written for each of the temples. Sadly to say, some statues are headless and handless, taken for personal interest only. The maintenance of the temples environment is still poor and many vendors will be running after you during your temple visit.

THE VOLCANOES (GENERAL)

by pangtidor

Indonesia lies on the area which is called The Ring of Fire, the area of active volcanoes in the world. It is no wonder that a large number of volcanoes are there all along the nation from west to east geologically. Many active volcanoes will be in Java, Bali and Eastern area. Furthermore, their volcanic actions have created the fertile soils, where they said can turn your wooden cane into a tree (one of an old Indonesia proverb). You may see on the news recently about the famous active volcano, Mt.Merapi (Central Java), which is frequently erupted molten lava or spew hot ash. The other most active volcano in Indonesia is Mt. Krakatau which is known for its legendary huge eruption in 1890s. some volcanoes, like Mt.Agung (Bali), Mt.Rinjani (Lombok, West Nusa tenggara), Mt.Bromo (East Java), the volcanoes arethe sacred places, home of the gods, where the annual offering ceremonies will be...

HIKING AND TREKKING

by pangtidor

With more than 50 national parks and numerous jungles and volcanoes all around the country, hiking and trekking will be one of the ‘must do’ in Indonesia. It is not a popular activity for the local people though. Some Indonesians have to walk through many miles daily to the jungle just to work at their farms. Besides that, it is seen as the poor ones’ or remote villagers’ activity, where the vehicles are not owned and the streets are not paved. Despite that, Indonesia government and some youth organizations are trying to improve this kind of activity by making some progress in most of the national parks like providing the better trails, better tourist information, better ranger posts, and better skilled guides. Get the good guide from the ranger post/entrance gate and negotiate the price first if you don’t go there with the arranged tours. DON’T TRY TO BE SMART BY DOING HIKING AND...

LET'S GO BIRDING

by pangtidor

A huge number of different bird species inhabits Indonesia. Get close to the birds, especially when you go for hiking and trekking. In some national parks, there will be bird watching towers where you can enjoy your birding. Going with a guide will be helpful because they usually know where the nestles are, what time the feeding is, and what species the birds are. You may remind them before your hiking and trekking that you want to see the birds too. These are the pictures of one species of hornbill in Tangkoko National Park (north Sulawesi) on our trip in September 2007. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and good zoom cameras. Another thing to be with you is the patience. The fantastic view of feeding time may happen every 20-40 minutes only.

Bali - Indonesia No.1 Tourism Destination

by SLLiew

Undoubtedly, Bali is still the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia. The number of arrivals has been badly affected by the two terrorist bombings. However, tourists are slowly coming back. The upside is that occupancy is lower and rates are more competitive. The island has natural beauty and cultural richness to make it a pleasant vacation spot. Surfers and beachcomers have been enjoying Bali for decades. If you have never been to Bali, you will be mesmerized by the Balinese culture and natural volcanic island beauty.

Sunset at Uluwatu

by Canguy

Although short, the sunset at Uluwatu is just simply quite a sight to behold. If you are in the Kuta area, you should not miss it. A word of warning --- there are as many monkeys as there are in Monkey Forest in Ubud; so be warned. If you go with a local guide, he or she can protect you from the monkeys by carrying a small stick or branch to scare them away. That was what my guide did --- it made my whole experience up on the cliff a lot more enjoyable, not having to worry about my hat and sunglasses being snatched away by those cute, but extremely pesky, monkeys. While you are up there, try to catch the faithfuls at prayer in the small Hindhu temple. But do keep your distance, especially if you are snapping away with your camera, as a sign of respect. On certain nights, too, there are dance performances. If you missed going to one in Ubud, you should try to catch one here.

BALI: IT IS IN INDONESIA

by pangtidor

Bali is the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia. The main attractions for this island are the beaches (for surfing and diving), the temples, cultural tourism, and art shopping. The good beaches are Kuta Beach, Sanur Beach, Uluwatu beach, Legian beach, and Jimbaran Beach. Great temples like Tanah Lot Temple, Ulun Siwi Temple, Tampak Siring Palace’s Temple, Besakih Temple are magnificent. Monkey forest is another interested place to visit in Bali along with the breathtaking sceneries. Many market and art shops for the sophisticated ones but don’t be cheated by the fake ones of the street vendors. This is the only place in Indonesia where you can do sunbath topless at the public beaches and wearing the sexiest dress you have on the streets without being embarrassed. It may be too touristic for others but the Balinesses are well known for their great attitude and manners as they...

Shop till you drop in Bandung!

by Anapots

There's a lot of factory outlets in Bandung where you could shop. It's about 3 hours drive from Jakarta if you take their efficient express way. Make sure you've got enough ID Rupiah when you come to Bandung coz exchange rate is low and there's not much forex except in the hotel.

Rice civilisation and culture.

by kokoryko

In Indonesia, the central element of life is rice, and in so many aspects: the list below is not exhaustive.Rice cultivationRice civilization (culture)Rice farming (agriculture)Rice culture (agriculture)Rice civilisation (culture)Rice culture (civilisation)Rice culture (knowledge)Rice gardening (plants)Rice crop (agricultural produce)Rice fieldsRice landsLike Eskimo people have several tens of words for ice, describing the different states and varieties of ice, Indonesian have many words for rice, from the crop on the field to the food you eat with your fingers, expressing their strong and deep link with this crop. The purpose here is not to make civilisation course, (better ask Indonesian people, like Rinjani or Ukirsari), only make you (as a tourist, traveller) aware and sensitive to this characteristic, which is very often overlooked in guides or travel guides; to understand people...
