Tea groves on the Puncak

by kokoryko

Taman teh, tea groves, or tea gardens can be found throughout Indonesia once the elevation is above 600-700m . Tea groves cover sometimes very wide areas and some villages located in the midst of very widely extended plantations are fully dedicated to the tea: growing, harvesting, processing, packaging. . . all is done for the tea.The biggest tea groves I visited were located in west Java, one near Jakarta on the Puncak hills (Puncak means hills. . . , but people call the area like that) on the alternate route from Jakarta to Bandung, between Bogor and Cianjur. The other one is south of Bandung, on the slopes of the Papandayan volcano. It is possible to visit a tea processing factory on the Puncak area; this factory is located near the “colour lake” (Danau Warna), on the left side a few kilometres after Cisarua on the road to the Puncak pass.We liked to hike in the tea groves far from...

East Java: Coffee plantations

by kokoryko

East Jawa is home of great coffee estates, created during Dutch colonial time; the coffee is still grown and processed on big estates. Once the coffee grains have been picked and dried they are sorted manually by women in big warehouses (main picture); each individual coffee grain has been taken between the fingers of a woman. . . . On picture 2 is a coser look, with the heaps of coffee waiting to be sorted but the women stopped working, being distracted for a while by a foreigners family visiting the factory, and welcoming them with bright smiles. The coffee is dried outside on platforms and is “moved” several times a day for drying efficiently, giving this pattern we see on picture 3.Ah if you do not remember how coffee beans look like just before they are ripe, here are on picture 4.

East Java: Kawah Ijen (2)

by kokoryko

The sulphur gathered in this volcano is used in a matches factory, and for chemical industry in Surabaya; it is just very amazing, that contrast between the middle age way of gathering (and treating the gatherers!) and thinking the use of this sulphur in “modern” chemical industry! On the main picture are again some hot sulphur flows, with their spectacular orange colour. The second picture shows the sulphur gathering place, far down on the flank of the volcano where vehicles can access to load the raw material.; you see the baskets and they will be soon weighted by a person representing the buyer for calculating what the gatherers will get paid.On the third picture are two young vulcanologists trying to breathe some air in the midst of vapour and other gases emissions; it is not pleasant to breathe that air but if you go down in late afternoon, you may enjoy a sunset over a sulphuric acid...

East Java: Kawah Ijen

by kokoryko

Kawah Ijen is located very far East on Java Island not far from the Bali strait.Kawah Ijen is a particular volcano producing big quantities of sulphur; the man on the main picture is carrying blocs of sulphur he gathered in the crater located 3 hours walk from where he will bring them; in both baskets are about 60 kg sulphur he carried out from the crater (250 m climbing) in the tropical sun. Sometimes they can make two gathers in the day, but generally it is one; the workers are paid for what they bring (weight); they earned in 1996 the equivalent of about 1 U.S.$ per day. . . . . . . Pictures 2 and 3 are views of the lake located in the crater of the volcano; this nice blue coloured lake is a sulphuric acid lake! Don’t put your feet in there! Well, I checked, it is not that concentrated, but it can be called an acid lake, so beware of nice blue coloured waters in some cases. On picture...

East Java: Hills around Bromo

by kokoryko

When driving going to Mount Bromo, you can admire the fields laid out on terraces on the very steep slopes of the volcanoes. The area is densely populated and every square metre which can be used for agriculture will be; the pictures show that the slopes are as much as possible used for growing crops; The last picture shows the road climbing up to the villages located on the flancs of Mount Bromo.

East Java: Mount Bromo volcano

by kokoryko

Mount Bromo is one of the best known volcanoes of East Java and Indonesia in general: it is a spectacular formation, easily accessible by road, and there are even hotels located at the rim of the caldera.Mount Bromo is located in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National park, a volcanic complex building mountains fifty km east of Malang, 150 km by road south of Surabaya. A good place to start the visit of Bromo is to go to the village located on the north-eastern border of the caldera; there are also hotels. From there is a view over the Tengger caldera, the Batok cinder cone, with the buddhist monastery at its base (picture 3), the Bromo crater itself (picture 4), and in the background, with fine weather, the Semeru volcano. Then it is possible to go down in the caldera, rent horses (picture 2) (myself, I was a bit tall for the small Indonesian horses) and go to the crater. Climb up the crater,...

Central Java: The Sultan of Solo!

by kokoryko

One picture for this tip, but what a picture!!! ( ah, this picture is not from me of course).Just outside the sultan palace is (was, in 1997) a photo studio which proposes to tourists (mainly local tourists, I did not see lots of foreigners in Solo) to be photographed with traditional clothes. The whole K. family has been fitted up to make a nice picture; it took about 30 mn to make the pictures, so if you include the preparation time the photography was not very expensive; it is posed, formal, etc. . but also fun, no? I just can recommend if you visit Solo to look near the entrance of the Keraton for a photo studio which should still be there; there were professional photographs and the assistants were nice (it was like in Hollywood, with make-up girls, etc. . . ); well, nice souvenir from Solo, and I was Sultan (look closely I wear a kriss (a ritual knife)) for a short time, it is not...

Central Java: Solo smiles

by kokoryko

Solo is a very friendly city, not too big and sprawling like Bandung or Surabaya ; it keeps a “provincial cachet” which is very pleasant. The markets are very nice to look at and I mostly liked the people and watch them doing their business with their wonderful smiles. The pictures have been taken in the market or streets of solo and the women, just have wonderful smiles, nothing to add.

Central Java: Solo palace; dinner at the Keraton

by kokoryko

We visited shortly Solo, on a week end and had been “invited” for a dinner by the Sultan of Solo! Yes, the Sultan invited Kokoryko and family! Hahaha, it was a paying invitation of course, and the sultan was busy and one of his nephews had dinner with us!If you visit the keratin of Solo, there will be a person who will ask you if you want to have dinner at the palace; why not after all, Indonesian food, in Indonesian ambience, and with gamelan music and dancers. I do not know why, sometimes I just forget to make photographs and I have very few of Solo. On the main picture are the dancers of that event with two K. kids; the music was played by a gamelanorchestra, an orchestra composed of percussion instruments (mainly gongs and bells). The palace at night is not very photogenic, sorry. I do not remember what we had for dinner, but the kids, strangely remember the desert, a sweet jelly,...

Central Java: Parang tritis

by kokoryko

After a day looking at the architectural marvels of Java, a bit a rest is a good thing and a tour in a horse drawn carriage on the beach is not a bad thing (main picture) . the beach of Parang Tritis is less than 40mn drive from Yogyakarta and waiting for the sunset there is a nice thing to do; I am not fond of beaches, but I remember I liked to walk on the black sand at sunset. So, carriage tours can be hired, but walking is nice as well, and later, some grilled fish in a small restaurant in the evening breeze is very good to finish the day. . . . Locals sell some souvenirs if you are in the mood. . . (picture2).
