by grace_ssy

Exchanging Money

by biawak

MONEY CHANGERS and BANKS will only accept US Dollar notes that are crisp and without any marks or folds on them. Some of them will only take bills newer than 1996 (they will charge a percentage cut on bills of 1996 and older). They also prefer the new "Big Head" Ben Franklin bills and may refuse older bills with the "Small Head". The denomination they like is USD 100.00 or 50.00. Anything smaller gets a lower rate. Anything bigger will probably be difficult to exchange! This 'new note' rule is only for US Dollars usually but they have been known to refuse other currencies as well. The rate is very variable so it is wise to shop around. Even in the airport there's at least 2-3 place to change money but just change enough for the taxi or bus fare plus first day expenses. If you need to change a lot of money, then you'll have to find a good money changer. Banks typically have lower rates if...

All lies, these fake artists.

by Bill_Steg

They drive you mad in more ways than one! These so-called Balinese artists who try and sell you 'their' paintings. In the first place these people can't paint! The painting is often done by under aged children in villages in the mountains and they get Rp. 5000 for them, where as they are being sold for around Rp. 500.000!!!! Uncouth.............. Try and get them to paint something for you on the spot. It is no fun these guys coming up to you everyday with their sheer anoying persistance! Tell them you're bankrut or try 'singelar pippies' (No money!)Go in to the local art shops and find out hat the real price is.

Expect the Unexpected!

by lmkluque

Can't really think of a tourist trap unless you expect to see this unusual flower, Rafflesia arnoldi. One of my goals while in Indonesia was to see this flower. I missed it by three days! It is the largest flower in the world. Grows naturally only in Sumatra, one of Indonesias thousands of islands. It is named after the naturalist Sir Stamford Raffles who discovered the parasitic plant with his friend Dr. Joseph Arnold during their travels. Despite its beauty, it is also called the 'corpse flower' because i really reeks, to attract flies for pollination. Almost 1 meter wide and weighing about 9 kilograms, it is by far the largest bloom in the world, besides being rare and endangered. A rootless, leafless parasite without a stem, this plant drains nourishment and gains physical support from its host vine. Over a period of 12 months, it swells to a cabbage-like head that bursts around...

Bargin in Bali

by Lizzy5

You have to be careful when you bargin at Bali. Sometimes they scream and almost cry when you try to get a better price, but they ALWAYS rip you of anyway. DON'T get angry, just act like you're leaving. If you're good you can get a resonable price but you have to work for it.

by sandravdp

The city of Kuta is not much fun to visit. It lays in the southwest of Bali at the coast. It is swarming with tourists. It is modern and not any different then your average western city. The only thing that is great to do there is going to the Waterbombpark. The waterbombpark has a river running through the park, surrounded by pretty flowers, trees and bushes. Take a rubberband and float along. Watch out for getting sunburnt! Also nice are the many slides the park has. You can also sunbade here, take a snack at the pool or go play volleybal in the water. More about this park you can find at my of the beaten path tips above. On the picture: a cute pony at Kuta.

museums tickets

by xaver

When you buy an excursion, try to remember that museum tickets are really rarely included on the price you pay and, as in case of Borobodur they could be not so cheap. The nice thing is that my indonesian friend paid about 50 cents and I paid 7 dollars.

School holiday season

by xaver

I came here last time during the indonesian school holidays and it was a mess, a mess to find a train ticket, a mess to find a cheap hotel, a mess to visit a monument, for a funny story go to my Yoyakarta page and read the celebrity tip.School holidays start at the end of june untill the half of july. If you have to go in that period, at least try to book train tickets and some hotels in the most turistic places, in advance.

by MilsVanils

Bali is popular for its exsquisite wooden carvings, tapestry, jewelery and artwork. Balinese masks make great presents ( they protect from evil ! ). Don not admitt you're American, as they tend to charge Americans more money. Always bargain with the vendours, they admitt to raising the price beforehand. When at a market, avoid venturing into the small dark alleyways. The vendours there won't let you leave !

by pavlag

You will get a bilion offers for a taxi ride everywhere in bigger towns like Medan. It's said it is better to take a guide or a bus or a taxi from a company you do know or an oficial shuttle to zhe hotel as some of the taxis are a fake and you can pay more as you would like for a ride. As we have not tried some unknown taxi we know nothing about if it is true or not, but we have heart this from all whom we have asked about Indonesia, including locals and people born there, so probably there is something on this warning.
