The Peak Season

  • As the most populous Moslem country in the world, 1 week around the Eid time will be the peak season in all over Indonesia. It is a Muslim’s festival after fasting month Ramadhan, it was on September 13th in 2007 and will be advanced 10 days every following years). Traffic during those days happens in Java cities, especially Jakarta. Nevertheless, Christmas time will be the peak season for the Christian areas like Manado, Ambon-Maluku, Papua cities, and Medan. January (New Year), school holiday (the end of May to first weeks of July) are the other peak season for the flights. There is a Mardy Grass festival in Bali so February will be considered as the peak season in that area. During Hajj and Umroh time (Muslim’s pilgrim ritual to Saudi Arabia), you may see more people in the bigger airports. You should have your airline tickets bought by your Indonesia’s relatives/friends/colleagues in those peak seasons for the cheaper price.

  • Soekarno-Hatta International Airports - Indonesia
    Soekarno-Hatta International
    Airports
    by pangtidor
There are 7 international airport in Indonesia : Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), Ngurah Rai(Bali), Polonia (Medan, North Sumatra), Sultan Syarif Kasim (Pekanbaru, Sumatra), Tabing (Padang, Sumatra), Juanda (Surabaya, East Java), and Sam Ratulangi (Manado, North Sulawesi). Many international flights from/to Jakarta and Bali, where other smaller international airports will just few flights from the neighboring countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and Phillipines. All the capitals of the provinces and few smaller cities will have airports for domestic flights. Ask the competent persons for any information you need for the airport (your relatives/friends/hotel staff/travel agencies) : maximum baggage, check in time, departure/arrival area/terminal, etc. The airport tax will be 15,000IR (less than US$2) for domestic flights and 75,000IR (around US$8) for international flight. Trolley may not be available in the smaller airports and in many airports, the porters will be the one holding the trolleys so you don’t have any other options than to use them. Generally, the airports will be safe but take extra precautions in Jakarta; ask help from the information desk only and don’t try to use ‘unofficial transport service’ if you don’t really know where your destination is. Have somebody to pick you up in the airport if possible. Duty free and shops within the airports are not really good and having ridiculously expensive prices. Like in any other airports, don’t leave your bags unattended. :-)

  • Lion Air Airplane - Indonesia
    Lion Air Airplane
    by pangtidor
Some plane crashes in the early 2007 made Indonesia’s aviation system and airlines in one of the worst airlines’ top list in the world. Nevertheless, many improvements have been made for the flight safety and enhance Indonesia domestic flight’s standard. The weather will be the common reason for the airlines to delay their flights. The planes may even fly back to the departure airport or turn to the other destination to avoid the bad weather, technical problem, and even the weird thing (my Jakarta-Makassar flight had to transit in Bali for 5 hours for unexpected visit of vice president in Makassar city). See my other transportation tip ‘The Peak Season’ too. Most of the airlines use Boeing 737 series whereas The Lion Air uses the latest one Boeing 737-900 and Batavia has Airbus series for the longer flights. Be sure to have longer gap time to your next flight because the domestic flights less likely to be on time. Lock your baggage and hand bags because the airlines will never take any responsibilities for any loss/damage. All the airlines will give you mineral water, any bottles contain fluid more than 100 cc will be detained in the boarding in security check. Only Garuda Airlines will serve you meal (other airlines will just give you one terrible taste small bread) so bring some meal/snack if you want to eat on the plane. Bring jacket if you can not tolerate the colder temperature on the plane, most of the airlines don’t have blanket for the passenger. Oh, an other thing, don’t be surprised to see how sexy the flight attendants are.:-)

    Where's The Wheel?
    by pangtidor
The driver seat will be at the right side of the car in Indonesia, like the way they do in UK or Thailand. The passenger is expected to go down at the left side of the car. Most of the cars will be Japanese cars (Toyota,Honda) and you may see some European/American cars in the big cities. Many cars are still using the accelerator without automatic driving system. There are no specific rules for the manufacture’s year or whether the gas fumes are tolerable or not, so you will see many old cars on the street with noisy horns and engines; and very intolerable grayish to blackish gas fumes.

It is a two wheeled square box carried by cow(s) and the best transportation for the farmers to carry their crops when the roads are narrow or unpaved. This PEDATI can be seen only in the farm areas or villages. Whenever you see one, ask the farmer if you can ride on his PEDATI. He will be very happy to give you a ride for free. The ride may not be comfortable because no seats will be available. Don’t forget to get some pictures. Not only will the farmer pose for you, but also the cow.

    DELMAN
    by pangtidor, 1 more photos
It is a two wheeled transportation carried by a horse. In many cities in Indonesia, delman is one of the main transportation. It has good seats for 4-5 people (average ones) and screen to protect the passengers from the rain. The taller or the fat ones most probably will not enjoy the ride on delman though with more than 2 companions. Most of the delmans are uniquely decorated by the owner, jingle bells along the way, colorful roof/wheel, or interesting horse attires. During the big festivals (Eid, Independence Day, Christmas, Easter, New Year, Harvest Season), the delman’s decoration will be more delightful. Just get ready for the inconvenient thing: when the horse raises its tail, hold your breath.

  • Car Rental - Indonesia
    Car Rental
    by pangtidor
Renting a car could make a convenient travel time , but there are things you should know for your pleasant trip too. Firstly, GET TO KNOW ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS. Find out if the fare will include the fuel and driver meal. In touristic areas, they will provide you water and umbrella during the rainy season. If you have to buy the fuel, find out which type of car you are going to use. Some will give you a cheap rate but you will spend more in fuel. Renting a car with the driver will be better but you have to get all the terms and conditions from the car rental company from the first hand or the hotel transport desk. Find out who will be responsible in case the car crashes or damaged during your renting time. In case you rent the car along with the driver, the driver will be responsible for it. Make everything clear before you rent the car. Secondly, BE CAREFUL WITH THE DRIVER. Do not leave your things in the car unattended. When your things will be lost, nobody will be responsible for that. Few drivers may even be the mastermind of the robbery. When you need English speaking driver, find out if there will be an additional fee for that. Thirdly, DO NOT RENT THE CAR BY HOURS. You can not expect the traffic on the streets and many drivers will try their best to expand the miles and hours. We rent a car from a respectful car rental company, EUROPCAR from Sheraton Jakarta. The driver intentionally trapped us in the middle of the traffic and refused to drop us saying it is not the company policy. The rental hour was doubled and he tried to get his extra money before we reached the hotel desk. After few minutes inconvenient complaining time at the hotel transport desk, we were able to get the price right. Be consistent and do not give up if you know you are right. Better to refuse a driver that you may think is not right from the beginning than fighting with the driver later when you are in the middle of nowhere.

    Dare To Ride?
    by pangtidor, 1 more photos
Ojek is a motorcycle, along with the motorcyclist, that offers you a ride to some places, one of the ‘unofficial’ main transportation that commonly used in all over the cities in Indonesia. Ojek is a good alternative transportation, especially when you don’t want to deal with the traffic in the big cities or when you want to reach some places that the cars can’t do so. Each motor will just have one passenger and you should bargain the fare before you ride on it. For the short ride (100-200m), it will cost you around 2,000 IR (Indonesian Rupiah). Ask the common/usual fare to others before you bargain to get the good deal. The safety is not an issue for the short ride there. Most of the times, the helmet is not available and the motorcyclists are kids. It is not a good choice of transport during the rainy season.

    Public bus

If you don`t wanna spend to much for transport and if you are communicative, then you must try local public buses. They are funny, they offer wild driving, they can be hot and noisy but still ... certainly you come on the spot where you want to.

And local people are far from boring. Try it!
