Train schedules on Java and Sumatra

by theo1006

You can travel by train extensively on Java, and the Indonesian Railway Company (PJKA) also exploits a few lines on Sumatra. The Executive and Business Class trains are a comfortable and cheap way to travel between the main tourist cities: Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, Surabaya, as well as many less frequented destinations. They have numbered seats and Executive Class has airconditioning (often rather too cold). When you are on a budget and do not mind crowded wagons and dirty toilets you can take an Economy train which also stops at minor towns. Especially the routes crossing Java from north to south have some spectacular sights, e.g. the route Jakarta-Bandung.The train schedules can be found at the PJKA website, see below. Only the Eexecutive and Business Class trains are available on the site. The site is in Indonesian, but not difficult to use. At the uper right are...

How to go from Jakarta to Bandung v.v.

by theo1006

If you arrive at Jakarta airport, the fastest and most convenient way to get to Bandung is by X-Trans shuttle bus. The bus leaves every hour from the domestic gates and brings you to Cihampelas street in Bandung for Rp 90,000 (July 2009) in about 3 hours depending on traffic.Of course you may want to go by train for the scenery, but this means an extra hour and Rp 100,000 taxi fare to get you to Gambir station, where very likely you have to wait another hour or so for a train (there are 10 or more trains per day). The X-Trans bus leaves from the desk at terminal gate:1A in front of Air Asia office1B in front of Cafe Masilia1C in front of Airfast office2E/F in front of KFCThere are also X-Trans buses from the airport to Serpong/Bintaro and Semanggi districts (residential areas near/in Jakarta). Consult their website.

Taxi Rental

by dave452

I rented a taxi at the Jakarta airport for about USD 5.00 an hour. The driver took me to two places I wanted to see that day. He walked around with me and made me feel safe. Much better than renting a car! There is a kiosk at the Jakarta airport that offers this service.

Visa on Arrival

by Chezal

If you wish to get a visa on arrive you can get this at most Internation Airport or port of entry. If you are staying less than 7days you can get a VOA for $10 US. OR Up to 30 days - $25 US (If you want a 2 month visa you need to apply for this before you come to Indonesia. The Indonesian consulate in Penang, K.L or Singapore are the best places to do this. )You can pay in US dollars or Indonesian Rupiah. However, you're better off paying in Dollars. Immigration seem to have some crazy exchange rate when you use rupiah, same as all consulates do here as well.Immigration count the day you purchase the visa as the 1st day. Beware they seem to count the legth of the visa strangely. It is advisable to leave on what you consider the 29th day so they can't find a reason to fine you. If you overstay your visa you will be fined $25 dollars a day. However, do try to avoid this as you don't won't...

Using Kijang

by suhazlina

Van (angkut-angkut in their languange) is main transport here, never seen any busses or blue color taxi. Very rare to to see the blue color taxi.If coming to Bandung must have Supir (driver) to bring us around. If not I think it really diffcult and for us (tourist) to use they public transport such as van is not advise to do that since a lot of pick pocket happen there.I have tried this man service and he really good. Pak Tedi is very patient with us we only tell him where we want to go and he will bring us around and the charges also reasonable for us.

Ferries in Java and Sumatera

by sukalejong

You can take ferry to Java from Gilimanuk in Bali Island. The ferry port in east tip of Java is called Ketapang in Banyuwangi region. And then, from Java you can cross to Sumatera from Merak in Banten Province to Bakauheni in Lampung Province. From Sumatera island you can cross to Penang (Malaysia) from Belawan (North Sumatera Province). Or, if you want to reach Singapore, you have to go to Batam (Kepulauan Riau Province) from Riau Province. In Batam you can take ferry from Batam Center or Sekupang. You can go to Melaka (Malaysia) by taking ferry from Dumai, a city which lies 188 km from Pekanbaru (capital of Riau Province).nb: You must take note that Riau Province is different from Kepulauan Riau Province.

price of fuel is changed enormous!

by kilat

The government raised the price of fuel ("BBM") with almost 30% in May 2008, and most transportation has become more expensive. Angkots (little busses) changed their prices, busses, and even becaks. But not only the price of the fuel and transportation has changed, almost eveything has become more expensive, because it needs to be transportated. For a lot of Indonesian people this is a big problem. Some of the poor people (but not all of them!) get some money from the government because the food is also become more expensive. But is not enough. If you go to touristic places only, the prices are always much higher than in other area's. But everywhere and everything in Indonesia has to be more expensive now. Otherwise nobody can't buy what they used to buy.
