Buying Pelni tickets

by Bonobo2005

In Jakarta it's worth buying from an agent. There are loads in jl. Jaksa area. Cost about $1-$2 extra but saves the hassle of going to find the Pelni office yourself by bus.Even if you couldn't obtain a ticket it's worth going to the Pelni port anyway, where you might be able to make a last minute deal on the black market. The Pelniroute Padang - Priok (Jakarta) is very popular, since the alternative, the busroute, is a terrible 30+ hour ride. Try to buy well in advance. Bukittinggi has a very well working Pelni agent on jl. Ahmad Yani. In Medan, the huge new Pelni office is professional and not difficult to find. Ask the guesthouse for directions. Otherwise, you can use agents there as well.In Batam you follow the main road on arrival to the left and than follow the road to the right, slightly uphill (20 min. walk from int.port). You can use motorbiketaxi cheaply. The office sells also...

Use Pelni ships !

by Bonobo2005

Pelni is the company that runs ferries all over Indonesia and you can book tickets for every class of comfort. Every traveller in Indonesia has to experience a Pelni trip once! Some things about economy class:* you get a small matrass (if you're lucky) on a raised platform suitable for 8 people in a row;* On certain ships bednumbers do matter; on others they don't (so get there early to claim your bed!); * If the bednumbers are sold out you usually still can buy non-seat tickets, which means you have to find a spot on the floor somewhere on the ship. Most of the time it's no prob to find a spare matress. If there's shortage people rent them out for small fee. * I found the lower staff on the ship very helpful and friendly. They can help you with many things such as giving you double food ;-) or finding you a matress;* economydecks are airconditioned but are open and give no privacy. They...

To travel around Bali I used Wahyu Pratiwa, tour & travel. Save as houses and for the right price with reliable and knowledgeable drivers.Agus DX, driver/owner. Office: Jalan Lebak Bene No. 6 XPh.: (0361)764 689They do tansport all over the island, one day or as many days as you like trips. Discuss your itinerary and have it written down in the contract the price including driver, then INSIST that they include the petrol and fines (bribes)!!! Be adamant.........!Tell him Bill Sayang sent you and he will give you the same prices as he charged me. Let me know how you go.....

Bemo

by iwent

Bemo is a public minibus. Bemos operate a standard route, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. Bemos can be very cramped and have not much place for luggage. In spite of all the discomfort it's the best place to meet people. You can charter a bemo for the day which includes the driver and the two or three 'money collectors'. These are the boys who collect the money and hang out of the door during the entire journey. When you charter a bemo you must bargain as the opening price is always far too high. Actually the bemo crew are quite pleased when you hire them, as being chartered is less hard work. Besides it's as much an outing for them as for you. Don't forget to bring some cigarettes as your crew smokes like a chimney!

In Bali, Hire a 4x4

by SirRichard

Hiring a car, as a little Suzuki Santana like the one we hired, is a good choice to see the island. The roads are good (the traffic ISN'T, take care!!) and as you get used to drive 'in the wrong side', it is a nice way to see everything.

Singapore Airlines The Best!

by lmkluque

I flew Singapore airlines and it was an exceptional way to fly.Remember that--for some of us--the Indonesians drive on the 'wrong' side of the road. :-) This is especially important when making a right turn or passing a car!!I went into shock the first time our driver made a left turn. Luckily there was always a driver that came with the car so my friends and I were spared the hassels of driving in the horrendous town traffic. This also made it possible to enjoy the charming views along country roads.

by lobstop

In 1995 we paid 20 US$ for a taxi the whole day. The driver is waiting for you at each point even for hours and takes you where every you want. For us that was the best method to get around. The alternative is to rent a motorcycle, which can be a little bit dangerous for some of the tourists because in Indonesia you have to drive on the right.
