I took the 'traditional boat'...

by R.Dettmann

I took the 'traditional boat' for diving. As you can see there is just enough space for 3 people. The 'captain', the 'guide', me and 4 diving tanks. I can tell you storries about that guid... glad I know how to dive :) The big ferry in the background of the picture is your transportation form one island to another. It is very cheap but not very fast and sometimes they just don't come to komodo for picking up people. But they go all day long from Bali to Lombok and from Sumbawa to Flores.

by boat

we were looking for turtles off the coast of lombok. we were very lucky and found several. it's a great way to protect turtles - pay the locals a day's wages for an hour boat hire and no way are they going to hunt them.

The Ocean Pearl and greeters in Semarang, Java.Other things, besides Borobudur, to see in Semarang:1) Gereja Blenduk, the Immanuel Protestant Chursh on Jalan Jend, built in 1753.2) Kelenteng Sam Poo Kong Temple (Gedung Batu) , one of the oldest Chinese Temples in Java.3) Simpang Lima, the huge main square.4) Chinatown and the Confucian Thay Kak Sie Pagoda, built in 1772.

Train

by xaver

I always moved by trains as they are really excellent: confortable, punctual and pretty fast. They even feed you any 2 hours in a long trip, but, ibnstead of what happen in the flyght, the hostess kindly avoid to wake you up to tell you that you can take something to eat.

There are several ways to get...

by superjonty

There are several ways to get to Sumatra, depending on where you are coming from. We arrived via 'the back door', as I call it. On the ferry from Singapore, via Batam Island and through through a place called Peken Baru. I read in a book sometime after this experience that Pekan Baru 'Is a pleasant place to make a base for a few days of exploring the surounding countryside' I would call Pekan Baru Hell on Earth!

by MilsVanils

The only way to get there is by plane. A boat might also be an option, but i was not informed of this.A taxi is the best way to get around Bali ( make sure you hike a bit from your hotel as the taxis get cheaper and cheaper ). Driving is very unsafe and the word 'signal' is unheard of, so be careful !

We came by a plane of Silkair,...

by pavlag

We came by a plane of Silkair, the doughter company of Singapore airlines. Huge Medan has a one runway easy to survey airport with a bording passes written by hand. Actually it is not unpleasant but in some way relaxing from all these colossal airports all around Asia. And for us was some really good feeling that we fly Silkair and not the local Dragonair old russian plane, which has stayed along the way from our plane to check out and looked worse as some pieces staying in museums. Soem other ways to get to Indonesia are the ferryboats. They are at reasonable prices and times.Around Sumatra we have moved (flashed and rattled) in our guide´s car and we were glad we do not have to drive alone as we normally do. Quality of streets (even a highway) was terrible, with a lot of holes and full of mad drivers, just like our good guide. We've spent a lot of time prying for alive these rides. But...

We hired drivers for two days....

by SooBrand

We hired drivers for two days. Although at times I suspected they took us only where they wanted to go we saw far more than if we had driven ourselves. Also with the incredible number of motorbikes on the road it was far more relaxing being driven and enabled us to sit back and enjoy the scenery. The drivers were also able to act as guides at many of the places we stopped at and generally provided a great insight into Balinese culture.

If you wanna visit my country,...

by ukirsari

If you wanna visit my country, you can go directly to Indonesia using aeroplanes (KLM, Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, Northwest, Japan Airlines, MAS, etc) to the big cities like Jakarta, Denpasar, Surabaya, Medan or Makassar. Then visit another cities using bus, train or ship or local aeroplane.Because my country have more than thousand islands (approximately 13,500 islands), you can visit them using local aeroplane, train, ship or bus, or combination. For example; if you go to Indonesia and landed at Jakarta. After walking around in this capital city and you want to go to Bali, you can choose aeroplane, bus or train then ended with ferry. From Jakarta to Sumatra or from Surabaya to Makassar, you can use jetfoil (like hovercraft). And Indonesia have uniques transportation called 'becak' (like rickshaw), find them at Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang and many places --and 'bajaj'...

Bali is such a far off...

by Geisha_Girl

Bali is such a far off destination, that it's much better to break up the trip by making a stopover in Singapore. Most of the airlines stop in Singapore, and from there Denpasar is only a 2 hour flight. This is probably the best route because it gives the traveler a chance to enjoy a very cosmopolitan city (Singapore) before entering the tropics of Bali.Once there, I thought I would 'travel like the locals' and hop on some exotic animal. The elephant rentals were all booked up, so I had to resort to the non 'island native' camel! I figured.......if I don't mess with him, he won't mess with me! Once I got on it and did a little touring around the villages, I found that the motorbike was the more popular mode of transport! Boy was I embarrassed!
