Beware in Kuta!

by tere1

In the Kuta area, while you walk in the street, you will be offered drugs and money exchange. No matter if you're young or old, they will try to sell you drugs. Also, they will offer to exchange your money . Never do it with street people, there are many places where you can exchange your currency, many shops and money exchangers that are safe and you won't be ripped off!.

Indonesian ATM machines...the other way around.

by tan1415

I guess this should be considered a warning. It's not that they are unreliable(They can be) or that using an ATM machine could be dangerous(muggers)....But this warning is about the way ATM machines work here. It seems it works just the other way around from what you are used to back home and in most other countries. Real weird and the bad part of it is...you run the risk of forgetting and losing your ATM card.In most other countries you first collect your ATM card and than you get your money. In indonesia it's just the other way around.Everything is exactly the same with the usage of the ATM machine..but just this last bit is the otherway around. First the money than the card. And I must say a few times while I have been distracted...I almost automatically left after i retrieved the money, almost forgetting my ATM card.So be warned..maybe it looks all so familiar and easy. But if you walk...

Lock Your Bag, And Choose the Right Combination!

by jungles

We were robbed by hotel staff three times during our four-month stay in Indonesia, each time out of a locked bag inside our hotel room. Invariably, they would take some of our cash, but not all, so we wouldn't notice until several days later after we had already moved on to another town. It took us a while to figure out what was going on, but we finally got it. In every hotel in Indonesia you have to fill out a very detailed check-in form including your address, passport number, birth date, etc. If you use a lock with a combination involving any of the numbers that you provide on that form, then the hotel staff can enter your room when you're not there and try their luck with all the info you've given them. My combination was the house number in my street address, so that was my downfall. So the moral is, don't carry large amounts of cash with you, and if you have to, make sure to lock...

BALI--Avoid money changers

by toddytapper

There are a lot of money changers on street shops that promote exchange rates higher than you will see at banks. But most likely you will not be better off if you try to change money there for two reasons: First, most places that exchange money use calculators that are programed to cheat when they multiply foreign currency that does not start with 1 and end with a 0. Second, even when you give them bills such as $10 or $100, they will try to cheat you in counting the money, or in "stacking" the money before they give it to you. They often do this on a desk, where they have its drawer open, and after they count the money they try to stack the bills at the end of the desk and flip a few bills with their thumbs into the drawer. If you give them bills like $100s, and stand on the top of them while they count the money or ask them to count several times, most likely they will give your money...

unexpected bus drop offs

by Nicola2004

When you're travelling in Indonesia make sure you ask whether the bus you're going to travel with is going to have a stop somewhere. I heard from several travellers that they were dropped off in tiny villages where they had to wait for their next bus... sometimes those buses never showed up. I was a bit confused when my (almost empty)bus suddenly stopped and we had to get out while the bus left... I guess I was lucky that my next bus showed up exactly 1.5 hours later. It was midnight when the bus arrived and I spent 90 minutes in a tiny remote village which was quite an experience though. Suddenly I was surrounded by a crowd of kids pointing with their fingers at me touching my arms. Later a few men invited me to watch a muslim funeral in a houses backyard. I'll never forget those 1.5 hours! :o)

Touts Be Gone

by Gage17

This is more of an annoyance than a warning, but be prepared to be hounded whenever you step off your bus or train. Touts abound at these points of entry trying to rustle up some business. If you don't know where to stay, feel free to listen to your options and try not to get exhausted.

Jakarta - Taxi Touts

by amidis

Jakarta - be careful of touts at the airport especially if you are a first timer! I was quite careful and still conned by a man well dressed thinking he is the authorised taxi agent. Go straight to the driver and dont listen to any one to talk to you for taxi.

Look out for these nasties!

by kiwi

Watch out for the cockroaches! They are pretty big! I guess you just have to learn to live with them, as they seem to appear often. I'm not used to that, so it seems nasty to me, but probably not as bad as I imagine.
