Beware of food poisoning! Be aware of what you're eating - and if the flies are buzzing around your food before they serve it to you - don't touch it!Do change money at banks or from official licensed money changers. Be careful of pickpockets at crowded places and do not travel alone at night.

In Bali you have to be careful with food , where you eat and what you eat.Don't drink tape water, only bottled water. Never eat salads outside the hotel or uncooked food.Be careful with moneychangers, always change your money in Kodak shops or authorized money changers. In Bali you will be hasseld a lot and they will try to ripp you off so watch out.

It is sad to see the extent to which Bali has become dependent on tourism. Round most of the tourist attractions are masses of shacks which predominantly sell the same goods, we wondered how these people could possibly make a living. Also when stopping the car at the rice terraces people appear from nowhere and surround you trying to sell you carvings and sarongs, sadly children are also trying to push you into buying pencils from them saying the money is for school. It also makes a simple walk up the beach trying at times when you are constantly asked whether you want a massage, manicure or transport - although a polite no thankyou is always accepted.

DO-- Shop around for the best money exchange rates Wear lots of sunscreen when travelling around or swimming Drink a lot of water Take care of your belongings at all times. It is better to leave your valuables your hotel safe and Wear your bag across your shoulder. Avoid stepping on ceremonial offerings in the street Bargain when shopping except on fixed price tagged goods Make sure that you have personal or travel insurance that will cover any accidents Be careful when driving in Bali, keep your eyes and your mind on the road. Wear a sarong and sash when visiting temples and attending ceremonies DON'T-- Swim outside of the designated areas as currents and undertows can be very strong Take drugs - it can result in imprisonment and can carry the death penalty Touch peoples heads - this is offensive to Hindus Tnter a temple when menstruating Worry about the ice - it's government controlled...

When you arrive on Bali by plane go to the front of the terminal and buy a transport/taxi ticket from the transport office. Rp. 20.000 for the Kuta/Legian area.Once you're settled in and you want a taxi ask reception to call you a 'light bleu taxi'. They are government owned and are less likely to cheat you. Always make sure that the meter is turned on!

by politigal

You guys are going to think that I am just a really bad traveler for getting myself into these situations, but I have to share these experiences with you!! Do not get bitten by a Balinese dog, granted this should go without saying, but if some one had warned my friend Cody, perhaps he could have avoided his life-long friend Lenny.Let me explain (please you say!) Cody was bitten by a normal looking dog as we walked down the beach. I think Cody surprised him and he snapped, a normal dog reaction, but let me assure you... this was no normal dog!!! He passed onto Cody a parasite that he has not been able to get rid of to this day. Initially it made him very sick for about a year. He has been to many many doctors and no one can tell him exactly what the parasite is nor how to get rid of it so Cody has simply accepted it and decided to live a twisted symbiotic relationship with the parasite he...

****TRAVEL ALERT-APRIL****Maluku province is closed to foreigners (including journalists, reporters, and correspondents) and foreign non-governmental organizations until April 30, 2002. Curfews are in effect in Ambon. These security measures have been instituted in anticipation of possible activities of the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) in the days leading up to April 25, when separatist groups will attempt to raise the flag of the banned South Maluku Republic.

This country is still trying to recover after it's fight for independece. If you decide to travel here then please choose your accomodation with care, don't openly flash money, and just be vigilant. A knife in the back is not unknown in this location.

by eManWithG

Islam is the predominant religion of the archipelago but it's somewhat tempered by elements of Hindu-Buddhism, adat and animism. In Java, especially, there are hundreds of places where spiritual energy is thought to be concentrated and can be absorbed by followers. Despite a lengthy colonial period, missionaries were only successful in converting small pockets of the Indonesian population to Christianity - the Bataks of Sumatra, the Toraks of Sulawesi and 95% of the population of Flores being notable examples.
