Bali Ducks Peering over the lip of a rice terrace

    by amyLbrown2002 Written Dec 19, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This little part of Bali life really thrilled me. Apparently ducks are one of the domesticated animals in Bali life. Every morning, rice farmers will lead their flock of ducks out to the rice paddies. We carried a pole with a flag tied to the end of it, which he plants in the middle of the rice padi.

The ducks will stay there all day, in view of the flag, eating the insects which destroy the rice. At sunset, they return to the flag and wait dutifully for the duck man to come and pick up the pole and lead them back to the family compound.

How sweet! So keep an eye out for this!

We were there in mid-March. We were harassed by the roadside vendors or shopkeepers in most places, especially in Ubud. The tour guide was embarrassed too. Toiletries and Medical Supplies: I have never suffered so much with an itch as I did in Bali. I got a horrible rash all over my hands - it completeley covered one of them!

I read in the Lonely Planet that this is quite common - and I suggest taking some cream as a precaution because we had so much trouble trying to explain to the chemist what I had and finding a suitable treatment.
