NIGHT LIFE? It does exist in the form of music and dance and disco in one or two locations. Ask locally about which places are protected by the strongest faction of the army. "Becak "here we called it, when we were staying at Hotel Salak, we took this "Becak" went to the local market which is nearby the Hotel, just about 10,000 rupiah I paid about Usd 1. My children was very happy due to this transportation seldom found in Jakarta now a day.

HOW TO GET THERE? - From Jakarta, take a taxi/hired car from a reputable company (buses and trains are not too safe, being frequented by thieves) for the one and a quarter hour drive along the motorway to Bogor. (Take advice on which taxi firm you use. Some taxi drivers rob tourists.)

  • GETTING AROUND BOGOR

By angkotThe easiest way to get around Bogor is by angkot, little green minibuses, hordes of which infest Bogor's central streets. The downsides to using angkot are that the drivers are reckless and theft is all too common (guard your belongings). Also, some angkot like 02 or 03 only depart from their pangkalan (terminals) when full — 10 minutes on...

Bogor Local Customs

Local people are using Betawi (Jakarta) and Sundanese lingos for daily activities. Sometimes can be described as 'little Bandung' because we can hear someone saying 'Punten' (greeting) as always happened in Bandung. You can say 'Punten' politely before asking about direction or need a guidance.
Be patient during the weekend, because the traffic jam is equal with Jakarta. Also caused by many factory outlet (FO) which sells many kind of clothes. And the other side, please be calm with angkot (mass transportation) everywhere.

Bogor Warnings and Dangers

  • HEALTH & SAFETY

HEALTH? Indonesia is one of the worst countries for typhoid, dysentery, TB, encephalitis, and similar diseases. And the Bogor area is remarkably short of good medical facilities. Don't eat the salad in some of these badly managed fast food American franchise restaurants (the names may be American but the staff are local). If you get ill, go to the...

Bogor Tourist Traps

  • by Aang Written Nov 5, 2002

THE ARMY? The top generals are all trained by the USA. The army makes most of its money from running various businesses, which are said to include protection rackets, drugs, gambling and prostitution.

Allegedly the various bomb outrages are linked to the army.

The army allegedly control various militias. Certain generals are allegedly the secret controllers of Laskar Jihad. Allegedly the army tries to stir up religious strife in order to undermine democracy.

Every village and hamlet will contain a soldier whose job it is to keep an eye on things. Every branch of government contains military or former military people. Allegedly the top officers are often unable to control their own troops.

Avoid contact with the army and police if at all possible. I found that soldiers were often threatening and intent on taking money from me. What stops the army from exercising total control is that they are thoroughly divided into factions.

Unique Suggestions: Pretend to be anything other than Australian. The army hates Australians because Australians eventually halted the army's genocide in East Timor where over 1/3 of the population died.

    Fun Alternatives: Meet the locals.

Bogor What to Pack

  • Quite chilly at night

Hey, it could be quite chilly at night, especially if you're thinking of running around in the wild, sitting in outdoor cafes, warm tea/coffee just won't do it ! Bring an extra jacket just in case. It could be breezy sometimes. Although it's a nice change from the Always extra Hot and Humid Jakarta.
