HEALTH & SAFETY

HEALTH? Indonesia is one of the worst countries for typhoid, dysentery, TB, encephalitis, and similar diseases. And the Bogor area is remarkably short of good medical facilities.

Don't eat the salad in some of these badly managed fast food American franchise restaurants (the names may be American but the staff are local).

If you get ill, go to the private Pondok Indah hospital in Jakarta or maybe risk the new private hospital in Bogor (Not the filthy Red Cross/ Red Crescent hospital or the Karya Bhakti).

Some medicines sold in Indonesia are FAKE and could kill you. Go to a good chemist.

Government hospitals in Indonesia are often regarded as death traps.

Avoid mosquito bites by wearing long trousers/skirts/sleeves.

CRIME. Be careful at night and near bus stations. DON'T LOOK LIKE A TOURIST.

At night, go with an Indonesian if possible. Crime has been rising in Indonesia. But, most of the time you will be safer than in the UK.

In most neighbourhoods, the local people keep an eye on each other and stamp hard on troublemakers. Persistent criminals sometimes get beaten up and killed.

Most crime is committed by members of the armed forces and police, the same people that allegedly run the various rackets.

School kids often form gangs which kill each other. Avoid knife wielding gangs of rich school kids on the outskirts of Bogor.

Bus drivers are often high on drugs and alcohol.

Don't buy drugs.

There is a very high incidence of AIDS, particularly among prostitutes.

The weather in Bogor can change fast. From nice warm weather to rain and thunder. The frequent raining makes Bogor well known as Rain City. This rain many times ruin original plan to visit some places where you expect sun will be there!
Carry an umbrella or prepare for the rain coat is a wise things to do. Rain usually occurs from Mid Day to afternoon or evening.

Thunder

It never fails to scare me. Raining usually followed by lightning and thunder. The voice of the thunder usually makes one jump (especially in rainy seasons and it almost always follow by electricity goes off)

It is advised to stay indoor when thunder occurs. Several accidents reported to people who happen to be outdoor and the worst case can end with death.
