Many tourists, many hard sells, swindling, long travel way
after 10 hours ride ... here's the edge of west java!
I like a bit of jungle. Pangandaran was great, because the peninsula at the south end of town is a national park, and not many people go there at all. So it's easy to get to an unspoilt bit of jungle.Getting in, you will be approached by various guides, but for the most part, you don't need guides. Just follow the paths. I found my way all around...more

Pantai Pangandaran (Pangandaran Beach) may be one of Java's finest beaches ... but you need to take great care when swimming especially at the East Beach. The Westerly Beach is regarded as better, but take care! Strong undertows can be dangerous even though a coral reef has reduced their impact. The snorkeling is here the best, the warnings are,...more
In Pangandaran you can organise a guided day-trip with a small group that will take you to see many interesting sights in the nearby area. Citumang Dam is a gorgeous place that makes a great daytrip from Pangandaran. Don't let the word 'dam' put you off; there is nothing man-made about the beautiful natural landscape here. It's almost worth making a trip to Pangandaran just to sample the tropical fruit. Ofcourse some are not that unusual in the West, like pisang/banana, the nanas/pineapple and the mangga/mango. Durian, my favourite, is the most infamous tropical fruit, included because of the juice that leaves a permanent stain on your clothing. In Pangandaran you...more

Pangandaran lies more or less halfway between Bandung and Yogyakarta or Dieng. Banjar is the turn-off point on the Bandung-Yogya rail and road route. Coming from Central Java, an alternative is by train and bus all the way to head for Cilacap and make the very nice backwater trip by boat (prahu) from there to Kalipucang, 17 km north of...more
The durian fruit comes from the durian tree, found in the jungle rainforest (Malaysia, Thailand & Indonesia). I love the brown to green fruit, always taking care of the strong sharp thorns. Especially when split (mostly 5 parts) and watching the creamy, yellow pulp. I know a lot of people dislike the smell and overpowering aroma, making the durian...more

Once avoiding these 3-dimensional wooden puppets I love the weird-looking figures. And always sneeking into the shops around where you can buy these, even the common touristy ones. Better ask around for someone who can take you to a privat puppet master, Northerly of Pangandaran. Beautiful exceptionally fine Wayang Golek puppets!!! These...more
Even the whole world is getting concerned about smoking a cigarette, Indonesian people love ngobrol (having a chat) and, when once familiar with tourists, smoke a kretek (Indonesia's indigenous clove cigarette, and part of their culture and traditions).So,... even not smoking, one of the easiest ways to make friends around Indonesia is simply...more
Indonesians, both men and women, are generally not comfortable being alone ... even on a simple errand they are happier having a friend along. So they donot like travelling all alone. So travelling always is a very "ramé-ramé" event (busy, fussy, lively, bustling and even noisy). And being part of this could be so amusing, so enjoy your travel...more
Indonesian people love to talk when once familiar with tourists. The "ngobrol-ngobrol" style of speech is a superb example of pure and simple, with the aim of "telling it like it is", without overdoing. These people love their stories "ngobrol-ngobrol" style, which is the way they normally communicate in daily life. Sitting on the ground or...more
Whether local or not, young testosterone-poisoned louts cruise the streets on their muffler-removed motorcycles the entire night. If you want to get any sleep, better bring a good pair of earplugs. Better yet, consider spending the night out of town. The police are obviously completely ineffectual. I'm told they fear confronting the louts, who are...more

Indonesian currency is "Rupiah" (IDR). It is a national tradition to "tawar terus", keep on bargaining. This is even true when you wanna exchange your money for Rupiahs at a bank! Well there had to be something...
Litter. Litter Litter.
Wherever Indonesian people go ,
they leave behind lots of litter.
It bothers me. They just leave it on the beach
or throw it in the forest.
Luggage and bags:
Especially Bandung people love to visit Pangandaran during weekends and holidays. A lot of accommodations, restaurants, souvenir shops, recreational facilities, so find yourself a good accommodation, and bring just your city backpag to travel around (belly-belt or small rucksack to keep your travel informations).
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Lightweight cotton clothing, pay attention not to wear green in your clothes. Good footwear is important (for the Green Canyon), hat, sunglasses.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Sun-protection cream (!!!), and tissues, (wet towels). Indonesia is endemic with hepatitis, dengue & malaria fevers, with some parts having Japanese encephalitis, so get your shots & have some medical insurance cover, to get you home in the event that you get ill. Cholera outbreaks are not uncommon in the "dry season" & as this is transmitted by water, ensure you use only bottled water!
Photo Equipment: Bring extra battries, and digital memory as its hard to find these items locally. Fuji is the best you can get there (supply is rather new, others could have been damaged by sun-heat).
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Have a supply of sun-protection cream, first and foremost. And trekking around and wanna stay on the beach (not that good idea!), bring a sleeping bag, mosquito-proof tent and electric torch.
Miscellaneous: Pangandaran is more the Kuta-style resort, still try to be nice to local people. Take your books, sarung, and a musical instrument (when playing). People love to hear your playing ... also in Pangandaran!
Because there is a lot of misinformation circulating about this plant, some about this very unique flower of the Sedep Malam which is my favourite flower too!The wite flowers only blossom when sunrise has began. A sweet smell from its flower will be engulfed a passer-by. This unique smell can be overpowering so people tell no any other flower can...more
Although Pangandaran got a well-known beach-resort the "Backwater Trip" from Kalipucan to Cilacap could be outrageous, too. There is some tourism and you could...more

We went for the rather small boat ride from Kalipucang to Cilacap. WOW, this is one of the highlights of a trip, leaving Pangandaran in a superb way. Try to get the ferry as early as possible (07.30, 08.30, 10.30 o'clock), and say goodbye to Pangandaran by bemo, by colt or by bus (the minibus terminal in Kalipucang is only 200 m from the ferry so...more
