  • The Dayak Longhouse (replica)

    Pontianak Things to Do

The indigenous inhabitants of Kalimantan are the Dayak tribes, once notorious for collecting enemy heads as part of their warfare. Those times a long gone; nor do many Dayaks still live in a traditional Longhouse (Rumah Betang, some write Rumah Bentang). If you have no time to visit a real one, go see the replica in Pontianak. The totems and the...

    Pontianak Shopping

For Kalimantan souvenirs we were advised to go to the stalls on Jalan Pattimura, which runs just north of the Cathedral. Here you can find all kinds of Dayak stuff, from clothing made of bark to traditional swords (mandau), from hats of natural fiber to rattan matting. Of course there is also a choice of miniature equator monuments to put on the...

  • Klenteng Kali Asin

    Singkawang Off The Beaten Path

A short distance south of Pecinan Jam Tang, they were working on a klenteng located on a rock. It replaces a smaller one that used to be there. A billboard that now has disappeared used to say that a klenteng was established here as early as 1661 AD. Therefore the Chinese settlement Jam Tang must also be at least that old. Here our guide Martin...

    Singkawang Things to Do

Not all Chinese live in Singkawang town. There are two ancient settlements several km south of town. Nobody knows how old they are; some inhabitants testify that they are the fourth generation. We found the well-preserved settlement Kali Asin easily. A colourful renovated prayer house with porch and pagoda marks the site on the road-side (photo see...

  • Klenteng Naca

    Singkawang Off The Beaten Path

According to our guide Martin Gunawan, this klenteng was established by the efforts of one man, who loved the site and the view for a retreat. It had been neglected for some time, but they are now cutting back on the encroaching forest and reshaping the garden. New toilets are being built to accomodate visitors. Address: Sedau villahge, Singkawang...

  • Keraton Ismahayana

    Ngabang Things to Do

Three of the four cities we visited in West Kalimantan used to be ruled by a sultan and so have an ancient palace (keraton) which is now open to the public; the exception is Singkawang, not founded by a dynasty but grown out of a trading post. All three palaces are built of wood and painted yellow, the royal colour. The main house of Keraton...

  • Rumah Betang Saham (Longhouse)

    Ngabang Things to Do

The Longhouse in Pontianak actually is a replica. To see an original, and still inhabited one, we were directed to Saham. This is the easiest one to reach from Pontianak. With a length of 180 m it has place for 35 households. Its age is uncertain, some say 200 years, others 300, but it is certain that it already existed when Krakatau volcano...

  • Banangar Waterfall

    Ngabang Things to Do

Because of its many rivers Kalimantan also counts numerous waterfalls. Most of these are difficult to reach. With assistance of friends we made a day trip to Banangar fall, a fall in middle reaches of Landak river. We could borrow a 4WD for the first 55 km instead of risking our rental car; yes, there were a few bad parts in the road, but it could...

  • The road to Temajuk

    Sambas Off The Beaten Path

We saw several beaches near Singkawang, with only one conclusion: we have seen better elsewhere in Indonesia. But there is one beach area in West Kalimantan we missed, near Temajuk village. Temajuk is the northernmost village of West Kalimantan. There one can find - so the Tourism Office informed us - 42 km of pristine sandy beach. They also warned...

It is the name of a Karaoke booth at the border of recreational lake Sebedang. As it was a working day the booth was closed and in the adjacent warung they could not tell us how they came by that name.We arrived at...
