I cannot visit a village or a town without strolling at the local market. That's where the heart of the locals beats. Try the contact with the locals and you won't be desappointed.
Taste the fresh fruits, they are delicious.

This village is the center of Lombok traditional weaving craft; This Lombok weaving cloth is called Ikat and has very typical patterns. You could see it very much as a collection of the ethnic specialty.

So many nice blouses, skirts, cloth, or home decoration.

Panujak village is known for it's authentic terracotta pottery making. The technique of production might be the most simple one. The result is very nice pottery, figurines of animals, etc. as a gift items for tourist. Most of the products are also exported to Bali.

All kinds of recipients, vases, plates candles, etc.

Amazing colours and workmanship goes into the production of some of the cloth here. All handwoven, you can see them making the cloth for yourself. If you are not in the market to buy, I suggest you have a look at the sheer time that goes into some of the dresses/material that they sell. Ratimah is the owner.

Traditional Sasak cloth, which could be used for anything back home e.g. tablecloth. Sasak Handicrafts. It is all very colourful. I purchased an unusual throw for home as well.

Expect to bargain. I bargained very hard and they came down a fair bit.

There are several villages in Lombok dedicated to pottery. Banyumulek is the easiest to reach, it lies half way between Lembar harbour and the capital Mataram.
The pottery is of a terracotta kind, with tied rotan or painted decorations.
A driver will probably bring you to 'Rismunika Astuti' art shop, which is located just off the main road. They have the most varied collection and are prepared to send your purchases abroad for you. They also give a demonstration how the pottery is made.
But it is worthwhile to go another km or two inland to Banyumulek village proper. Here every house produces and sells pottery, and you may see them at work too. Walk in and out several shops to find your bargain.

Vases, plates, candlesticks, small souvenirs, and so on.

Of course you have to bargain. Helen got six plates and two candlesticks for Rp 70,000.

  • Lombok pottery is famous for its style and beauty.
You wouldn't find a souvenir shop NOT selling pottery.
If you are a pottery lover - you may want to keep your eyes open.

Lombok also has plenty of traditional wooden sculptures and figurines. One that stood out among all is this statue/figurine of 3 brothers climbing on top of each other. Legend tells how three brothers were hunting deer in the forest one day. One of them Doyan Medaran, was waiting for his brothers beside a deer that he had killed when a giant appeared. Doyan Medaran was so frightened that he climbed up a massive tree to hide from the giant who, after devouring the deer, disappeared into the forest. Doyan Medaran remained stuck in the tree until his brothers came, along and rescued him by climbing on to each others' shoulders.

Personally, while I find the legend heartwarming, I find the statue extremely creepy. All 3 human figure were carved with facial features that we had come to associate with aliens, made famous by the TV Series "The X Files" - the same inverted dew drop head, slanty eyes without eye lids, almost non-existence nose and enigmatic mouth.

Would made an interesting conversation piece in your living room.

    Bargain.

    Banyumolek: Pottery

  • Lombok doesn't have much in the way of exciting shopping like Bali does.

Instead what you have at Lombok, are traditional handicrafts which are surprisingly a good bargain and of good international quality. Banyumolek, a village is one of the 2 known for its quality pottery.

We were pleasantly surprised at the standard and intricate designs/workmanship of the pottery industry in Lombok and bought several pots and decorative vases which amounted to about 300,000R.

Furthermore, they will pack it well for air travel.

Aside from pottery, Lombok is also known for its quality pearls (jewellery), weaved cloths and limestone carvings. They also make wooden furniture, wooden craftsworks for export at a fraction of the price you pay in your own country....from expensive woods like teak and mahogany.

Me....I can't bear the thought of cannabalising precious natural resources but the choice is up to you.

Mataram Mall: Shopping for groceries & everyday stuff

  • For standard shopping and grocecy stuff, try the Mataram Mall (city) which is about the only mall in the entire city of Lombok.

There are 2 fast food international outlets- KFC and McDonald's and a supermarket Hero which sells more variety of goods than found in small shops. These two outlets are the only fast-food international food found in Lombok.

Prices are quite reasonable than buying in small provision shops and you eliminate the risk of the person trying to cheat you by overcharging.

At Mataram Mall, you will also find several ATMs to withdraw cash and they accept other cards provided it has PLUS, CIRRUS, VISA, MASTERCARD etc networks.

Only in Mataram city, can you find ATMS at several places throughout the city. In Senggigi, there is only 1 other ATM and elsewhere in Lombok, there is none. So make sure you have cash with you, always.

People here, especially small businesses do not accept credit cards or foreign currency.

  • its in cakranegara, seems like every other shop along this lane was selling almost the same stuff. they sell tshirts, batik, sarongs, etc we paid around 18,000rp for each tshirt but gotta buy minimum 12 pieces. they have cheaper tshirts but the quality of cotton was different. we took the better ones. i think the cheaper ones were around 12,000rp. good touristy tshirts to buy as gifts and cheap as well. got very big sizes which cost more.
