At Kuta Lombok you can get crowded by people trying to selling things like Coconut water and jewelry like pearls and T-shirts and so on. So if you buy from 1 person or likely a kid you`ll be swomped with probably many other people trying to sell you the same thing and they will come running to you and even come with motorbikes with their goods to try and make a sale. They will even follow you around and keep on asking you to buy something which is very annoying. The goods is very cheap but the kids selling the coconut water can try and rip you off with some high prices so get a price 1st before you tell them to chop open the coconuts and do negotiate the price with whatever you plan to buy.
Unique Suggestions: Probably best to buy things without others seeing you if that`s possible because most of the people is selling the same things and if they see you buying something they will coming running to you with their goods.

they'll follow you everywhere.
actually they're pretty friendly and you can have little fun chat with them.
they even will tell you the local jokes.
but its kinda annoying when they act serious and force you to buy the things.
Unique Suggestions: the best way to say no if they're really upset you:
got no money left to buy what you sell. sorry.
and then ignore them.
Fun Alternatives: or maybe you should just visit the places that have less hawkers there like the gilis.

As in Bali, you have to bargain for almost everything in the shops, to rent a car, book a day trip, get a taxi (unless it's metered)....
My friends and I went on a day trip with these 2 fellows who offered to be our guides. They showed us some nice pictures on a chart and part of the deal was to bring us to the waterfall in the nature reserve. However, after driving for over 1.5 hours, they brought us to a place which looks like a public pool and told us the path to the waterfall was inside. So we paid the entrance fee, went in, and tried to look for the path to the waterfall. There was none. The only thing that looked remotely like a "waterfall" was some spring water trickling out from the side of a mountain wall! When we asked our "guides", the first one told us that the govt has re-directed the waterfall due to an irrigation project. A little later on, the one said that it wasn't possible for them to bring us to the waterfall as it would take an hour's hike to get there, and plus it was raining heavily.
What a load of BS!
Anyway, book a day trip with someone who sits in an office, they may be more honest.
Unique Suggestions: Always check the authenticity of the locations and ask what you can see there. Obviously, you can't see a waterfall at a public pool.
And you can forget about visiting their temples, I went to the biggest one (as they claimed) and the place was a shamble! If you do really, really want to go, don't ever pay for any guides there cos you'll only be paying for someone to walk you around the block.

watch out in lombok: it's ot so easy to move like in bali and people are not so friendly (they are not indù but muslim and much more retrograd about women: we had to say we were married to be more "free" to move). hotels take advantage and have MUCH higher prices. moreover novotel (very good) it's about 3-4 km from the center f the village: a sort of gold prison. organize yourself and search for external contacs.
for example we had a trip to gili island with the hotel (44 $ each!) eel temple, pusuk pass, gili island (WONDERFUL) with lunch ina restaurant reserved by the hotel (nothing special), snorkeling at the island (WONDERFUL! the sea it's very god and much more beautiful than in bali! if you like the sea not so "turistic" go to gili!), sing iggi. we became friends with the local guide and organized a trip without asking the hotel: with 50 $ total he took us in a wonderful trip (most beautiful trip of the vacation) and transport to the airport for coming back to bali.

Well, i´m not shure if this was a real tourist trap, but during our stay in the Sheraton in Lombok, we saw some typical dances, we asked about them but nobody was shure if the dances were Balinese or Lombokese. But besides that we enjoyed the dances.
