    Just walking around town...

Gunung Rinjani across rice fields from the east rd

Tetebatu is spread out along two main roads, the north-south road and the east or waterfall road. The north-south road houses several accommodation places north of the junction with most village houses south of the junction. There is also accommodation between 200 and 500 metres up the east road from the junction.
The roads did not seem terribly busy to me although motorbike do roar past. It is quite pleasant, especially in the late afternoon to walk south of the junction and chat to some of the locals or head north and admire the majestic views of Gunung Rinjani.
At the centre of town, the junction of the two roads, there are several small shops and warung selling Sasak food and coffee.

    Ricefields in Tetabatu

There are some beautiful walks through ricefields around Tetebatu. These can be done independently or with a guide. Generally I prefer to hire a guide when I am walking on other people's property. I was accompanied by a young man from Cendrawasih Cottages and I'm glad I took him - although young, he had a lot of knowledge of the local area and he led me along the safest banks of the fields, it does get slippery and the walls can cave in.
We had a very pleasant two hour walk through the ricefields, along narrow rivers and irrigation channels and ending at a fresh water spring where we could cool off.

Air Terjun Jukut Waterfall near Tetebatu

Approaching Air Terjun Jukut near Tetebatu

A pleasant 2 km walk from the entrance to Gunung Rinjani National Park brings you to Air Terjun Jukut, a beautiful waterfall cascading amongst lush foliage. Locals believe the waterfall has special properties - the water is said to prevent baldness. Indeed, I was accompanied to the waterfall by a young man from Tetebatu who had plenty of hair, but as soon as we arrived he had rinsed his hair in the water, ensuring me that the water was helping maintain his hair growth.
Be aware that the paths approaching the waterfall are quite slippery so take the stairs slowly.
There is a beautiful panorama looking downstream so the waterfall is a great place to take a breath and just slow down a little.

Pathway to Air Terjun Jukut, Rinjani National Park
    4 more images

Entrance to Gunung Rinjani National Park is about 4 km from Tetebatu. It is possible to walk along roads - although it is a fair uphill in some sections - or hire a guide in Tetebatu who can take you across ricefields. Either way, there are pleasant views.
Entry into the park is 20,000 rupiah. The park is well kept - good walking paths and clean. I spoke to a ranger on the day I was there and he said he is trying to start a program where every visitor will plant a tree. He also hires local children to pick up any rubbish that has been left behind.
A 2km mostly uphill but well paved path takes you to Air Tejun Jukut. There are some good views on the way and if you are lucky you will see black monkeys in the trees. There is also some really interesting foliage - I was particularly taken by the trees with big thorns protruding from their bark (see picture) and some huge tree ferns.
