    Pasar atas: local handicraft

by vayastra Written Oct 22, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Lively Pasar Atas (Upper Market), just south of the clock tower/ Jam Gadang, is lined with stalls and shops selling everyday goods and souvenirs.

They sell various hand woven, moslem praying mat and mukenah, hand made songket/local textile, wedding knick knack, gift, souvenir, food, everything.

    dont forget to bargain !

What to buy: Most of the prices in each kiosk are similar and you can bargain up to 50%. One wholesale shop located in the middle of Pasar Atas, sell souvenirs with the lowest price. One pair of women slippers is about Rp 7,000 and one key holder is about Rp 2,000 - Rp 5,000. Most of the souvenirs sold here have low quality. Souvenirs for a better quality can be found in Pandai Sikek. One men shirt is about Rp 35,000 and a pair of leather woman slippers is about Rp 35,000.

    Pasar Atas

Market in the center of the city. It's a tourist market, where the tourist shops so the prices are higher but the location is accessible and not too far from other places of interests
Open usually at 9 am and close in the afternoon around 6 pm.
    Don't forget to bargain.

What to buy: They sell traditional clothes, brodery, bags, sandals, souvenirs, all in local motives.
Try the local snacks and food, here the same food has a different taste to what we find in other city like Padang.
The snacks mostly made of rice or cassava but it taste spicy and really good.

What to pay: The food is quite cheap, just be careful of the hot spicy food, especially if you're not used to eat it.
T-shirt around $1,5, brodery is depend on the quality, it's around $20 and up.
