bull fighting without bloodshed

Adu Kerbau is the traditional bullfight that takes place regularly between two buffalo bulls who run around a muddy field until one flees, often breaking the barrier while spectators run for their lives. Many tour operators offer trips to Kota Baru and Batagak where the fights take place.

HOUSE WITH EXTENDED

This is the name given to the Minang house and take a tour from Bukittinggi to see them. The number of horns (extensions to the house)signify how many daughters the husband has and the house will get bigger as the family increases.

it call Jam Gadang similar with big clock in Bukittinggi. It located nearby Pasar Atas and Goa jepang.
A center of attraction is the town's clock-tower, topped with a horn- shaped roof and referred to by the people as Jam Gadang. It overlooks the market square and the city's magnificent surroundings.

there are so many things you can do around Bukittinggi! In cafe Bedudal we found a guide who had many suggestions and was very helpful - also if we wanted to do things on our own without a guide. His name is Fikar. Even by just browsing through his website you get so many reasons for going to Bukittinggi!

dokars
1 more image

In the north of Bukittinggi, close to the market and the Jam Gadang, are a lot of dokars waiting for passengers. This is a normal way of transport in Sumatra. But most of the dokars here are for the fun of tourists, so it's cheaper to take a taxi.
There are more names for a horse with a wagon. The "dokar" and the "delman" are small, the "andong" is bigger, for 4 persons.

Jembatan Limpapeh

Jembatan Limpapeh is the bridge between Fort de Kock (benteng)and the Zoo (kebun binatang).
The Fort is built in 1825 and named after the Dutch officer Hendrik de Kock. From here you have a good view over a part of Bukittinggi and Ngarai Sianok.
The hill where the Zoo is, is the highest place of Bukittinggi. ("Bukit" means "hill", "tinggi" means "high"). I wouldn't go to the Zoo, because the animals don't get the treatment they should have. On the same hill you will also find the museum "Rumah Adat Bandjuang Museum". The "museum Rumah Gadang" is a traditional familyhouse, built in the 19th century.

Jam Gadang, Bukittinggi

The Jam Gadang, in the centre of Bukittinggi, is the most famous building of Bukittinggi. It is at a square, surrounded by a little park. The government built in 2006 a shoppingmall in opposite of the Jam Gadang. All this is close to the market (touristic articles), and the shops.

Taman Panorama is a touristic spot in Bukittinggi with a beautifull view over the Ngarai Sianok, a 5 km long canyon. In the earlier days, the Dutch called this valley "het karbouwengat". It is also called "the grand canyon of Indonesia". At the entrance are a few touristshops. Apes will walk nearby.

You can take the stairs down to the valley and the river, where you see the high mountainwalls from below . From there, you can walk to Kota Gadang, the silvervillage, in half an hour. It's also possible to use a guide, for a more adventure trip (3 hours). See my other "of the beaten path" tip.
