    bull fighting without bloodshed

Adu Kerbau is the traditional bullfight that takes place regularly between two buffalo bulls who run around a muddy field until one flees, often breaking the barrier while spectators run for their lives. Many tour operators offer trips to Kota Baru and Batagak where the fights take place.

www.cimbuak.net and others have quite a bit written about this town/village so I would not go into details. I had a wonderful time here interacting with the locals. I do think that Sumbar people are really nice & friendly (or maybe they just do that to tourists :). Partly I guess due to their matrilineal culture which in essence, is to help the less fortunate (ladies or gentlemen) in their time of need. Hence for example, the concept of ‘Rumah Gadang’ (Main House) where anybody from the clan could find shelter there.

While I do not know much about 'songket', I do find the prices a bit more expensive than Malaysia. However, I think it's worth a visit since it's not that far from Bukit Tinggi. And while we were there, we did find busload of local tourists (probably Jakartans) bargaining their best for the songkets here.
