Kelok sembilan (nine bends) is located at the road that connects Padang in West Sumatra with Pekanbaru in Riau. More precisiously, near to Payakumbuh. The road goes through the high mountains, it is the shortest and fastest way to Pekanbaru. With a fantastic view over the mountainwoods! You shall cross the equator.
From Bukittinggi to Bangkinang will take 2 1/2 -3 1/2 hours by car, to Pekanbaru 4 - 5 hours. But you never know. It is a small road, used by many cars and trucks. If there has been rainfall, it can happen that the mud and stones from the mountains block the road. This is cold "longsor". It happens quite often. You will have to wait untill everything is cleared again. We were lucky, there was only one "longsor", and we had to wait only 15 minutes.
This road will be renewed soon. They are allready working on it.
There are stalls at the sides of the road where you can drink and eat something, but between Payakumbuh and Bangkinang are no places to stay, no hotels, even no other logements.
