Going to Prambana from Yogya is a breeze. Just catch a metered cab from town and you'll be there within one hour. Try to bargain with the taxi driver for a return trip price of USD10-15.
Question: What kind of transport would a diva take from Yogya to Prabanam?
Answer:Why, a fully-air conditioned taxi of course! And not just any taxi but a girly pink one. A return trip from Yogya to Prabanam cost us USD10. Ok, a little pricey but ooh, what a comfy ride. The taxi was a metered one so we didn't have to haggle over the price.
Other details:
Distance:Prambanam is 17 kilometers away from Yogyakarta
Time:It takes about 30min to get there, provided you don't make a pit stop to eat Yogya's famous fried chicken nearby.

There is a minitrain service within the temple complex which charges IDR 2.5K and will take you to all the temples located within the temple complex and will bring you back to the main entrance. You can hop on and hop off wherever you want. Initially I thought the service is meant for kids, but when I saw everybody boarding the train, then I too just boarded it. They are parked in front off the Museum.

Get around
Prambanan can be fairly easily covered on foot. If the midday heat is too much, there’s a train shuttles around the park for Rp 10,000 a throw.
