Baron bay II, history

by theo1006

Baron bay was not always this crowded. In the early seventies there were no foodstalls, no fishing boats, no paved footpaths. There were only coconut trees, a bare sandy stretch of beach, and one single gazebo owned by the local village head. Villagers came here to bathe their cattle.Compare my two pictures of the bay, 1971 and 2010.Gunung Kidul was a very poor region, dry and not fertile. In the seventies the road was paved with rock only, there was no running water and no electricity, the hills were mostly bare. For water the people depended on water holes and the river, making life especially hard in the dry season. All this changed when the late president Suharto made development of Gunung Kidul a priority. The roads have been surfaced, running water and electricity have been made available, and they did an especially good job reforesting the hills with acacia trees.Interesting too...

Kukup beach II, history

by theo1006

Like Baron bay, Kukup beach used to be a remote place, only frequented by local fishermen.Instead of the concrete bridge to the landmark rock there was only a rickety bamboo one.The coast and the sea have not changed though!

Kukup beach I

by theo1006

When you have come as far as Baron bay, do not omit to go the extra km to Kukup beach east of the bay. Here is a wider beach with rock formations not unlike the twelve apostles at Australia's Gold Coast, one of which can be accessed by a bridge and reminds one of Tanah Lot in Bali. The coast is rocky with some sandy patches and a strong surf, not advisable for swimming. Instead at low tide one can look for shells, and one can climb to one or more of the lookout points. Like Baron bay, Kukup beach is crowded on holidays. Spots in the shade of cliffs are in demand then, but you can get a free seat on a tikar mat if you buy a young coconut drink. On your right hand when facing the sea is a small cave, used for ceremonies. When we last were there a group was commemorating the death of a relative one year before. A year earlier they had thrown his ashes in the sea.No accommodation at Kukup...

Baron bay I

by theo1006

The beach at Bantul, due south of Yogyakarta, is bare and hot. At Parangtritis, to the east, the black sand beach meets the chalk cliffs known as Gunungkidul or southern hills. These hills and cliffs stretch for several hundred km eastward to Pacitan and beyond, making the coast dangerous and inhospitable. However, there are numerous bays and coves with sandy beaches. Many of these can be reached only on foot, but some have been recreational destinations for a long time. The best known and closest to Yogyakarta of these beaches is Baron. Perhaps in prehistoric times here was a river mouth. Nowadays it is an underground river which flows into the bay, creating an area with freshwater suitable for bathing. On weekends and holidays domestic tourists flock here for a day outing, some bathing but most just taking in the sights and eating seafood in one of the many foodstalls. So if you want to...
