Baron bay II, history
Baron bay was not always this crowded. In the early seventies there were no foodstalls, no fishing boats, no paved footpaths. There were only coconut trees, a bare sandy stretch of beach, and one single gazebo owned by the local village head. Villagers came here to bathe their cattle.Compare my two pictures of the bay, 1971 and 2010.Gunung Kidul was a very poor region, dry and not fertile. In the seventies the road was paved with rock only, there was no running water and no electricity, the hills were mostly bare. For water the people depended on water holes and the river, making life especially hard in the dry season. All this changed when the late president Suharto made development of Gunung Kidul a priority. The roads have been surfaced, running water and electricity have been made available, and they did an especially good job reforesting the hills with acacia trees.Interesting too...
