You could take a TAKSAKA, ARGO LAWU, ARGO DWIPANGGA executive air conditioned morning train or an evening train from JAKARTA GAMBIR Train station to YOGYAKARTA TUGU Train station, would take 7 hours, but sometime will take 9 hours, the fare in week days is a little bit cheaper than in the weekend, it was in the range of Rp 220,000,- to Rp 280,000,- (US.D 22 to 28), you would better to take a morning train scheduled at about 07.00 am or 08.00 am.
From Yogyakarta TUGU train station, go out toward Malioboro street(yogya main thoroughfare), it was just 10 minutes walking distance to HOTEL IBIS YOGYA at the left lane side of Malioboro street (No. 52-58 phone +62274516974) just beside MALIOBORO MALL. or there were many budget Hotels (US.D 10 to 20) at the small street PUJOKUSUMAN located at the left side of MALIOBORO MALL

Have a nice trip to Indonesia. Regard from Gani Bogor Indonesia
This tip created for those wish to do hiking up volcano Merapi and wish to go by public bus from Yogyakarta to Selo, the last district on northern slope of volcano Merapi, also used as basecamp by local hiker. In Yogyakarta city there are many puplic bus, normal price Rp 3000. To get Selo from this city here are my tip for transportasion acces:
1. Go by public bus to bus station Giwangan Yogyakarta, then transfer by other public bus to Kartasuro bus station, normal price Rp 6000.
2.From Kartasuro transfer to Regency Boyolali, normal price Rp 3000. Then by mini bus to Selo, if the mini bus was not full of passengers normally the mini bus stop for while to wait for other passengers at Cepogo traditional market.
You can take taxi from Yogyakarta Airport to Solo city. It is a prepaid taxi, you can buy the voucher at the taxi counter. You can see the sign of that counter at the outside of arrival area.
When this has been written, it will cost you aroun Rp 50.000
In Yogyakarta I see almost every day on my way back from my office a / some foreign visitor go around the city by Motorcycle. In Yogya city, motorcycle can be rented by visitor on a daily or weekly basis. For independent traveler, Motorcycle is one of the best alternative to go around and discover deeper the city of Yogyakarta Special Region .Now, the rental price is depending on the bike brand, and its condition, but expect to pay any where Rp 100.000,- pe-rday, or Rp 150.000,-for two days. Maliaboro and Prawirotaman are popular location for motorcycle rent. For foreign visitor, don't forget to bring passport and international driving licenses as it's recommended when you need to rent a motorcycles. And for domestic visitor, don't forget to bring ID Card.
The bus journey from Jogja to Denpasar (Bali)is a long one and can take upto 16-18 hrs. You have a choice of buses available-from cheap to luxury airconditioned bus options. Go for the luxury (A/C bus) option. The bus will go from Jogja to the port city of Nganjuk/Ketapang near Surabaya in eastern Java and then the bus will be loaded onto a ferry which will crossover to Gilimanuk port city of Bali (this happens in the night time). The total one way cost of the luxury bus from Jogja to Denpasar was IDR 120,000 in May 2007.
Once your bus sets off in bali, the drive is excellant (early morning hours) and within an hour or so, you will be in Denpasar. Most of the Indonesians will travel by this route to Bali.
Yogyakarta can be reach by Air Via Jakarta, it will take about 50 minutes fly with one of an Airliner: Garuda Indonesia Airways, a government owned airline, and many Private Air line such as Mandala, Batavia, Wings , Lion, Air Asia
Trains also provide good connectivity to cities within Java like Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Solo. There are couple of very good trains connection Jakarta and Jogja but their time off arrival into Jogja is very inconvenient (early morning hours). The interesting fact regarding Indonesian railways is that there are various stations within the city for specific class of carriages. For eg, the Tugu Railway station in Jogja is for all high class carriages like Executive class,. That means you cannot board the economy class carriages of the train at this station. For boarding economy class carriages, you will have to proceed to another station within the city.
Long distance buses are also a very good means of transportation. The buses can take you to distant places like Bali which is 16 hrs by road. Not a good idea specially for those who are on a short trip, but can be adventurous. The long distance buses are very comfortable, (similar to the VIP Coaches in Singapore/Malaysia) and start from Umbalharjo bus station in Jogja city. There are numerous travel agencies within the city selling the tickets to these destinations. They are relaible. Check with the reception desk of your hotel if you need to book seats in these buses. They can arrange tickets if you request.
Jakarta is 10 hrs away. Most of the buses are night buses.
Last, but not the least-the Becak (pronounced as bechak) can be a useful means of local transportation. Just negotiate and ride. These are chain driven cycle rickshaws, where the driver pushes the cart from the back. Very different from the ones seen elsewhere (for eg in India)
Jogja is well connected to all parts of Java by road, rail and air. Some international destinations like KL and Singapore are also directly connected to Jogja by air. I flew in directly into Jogja from Singapore by Garuda airlines, which has a thrice a week direct flight service between Singapore and Jogja. There are numerous flights between Jogja and Indonesian Capital city Jakarta, served by Garuda and numerous other private/budget airlines. There are also direct flights to Denpasar (Bali), Bandung, Lombok, Suleweisi, Medan (Sumatera) etc and the airfares are very cheap.
