    Malioboro area: Overated Malioboro

by ricardoz Written Dec 22, 2006
Jl Malioboro, next to the railway line

Probably the only night spot in Jogja where all locals and tourists are seen to be shopping for batik, shoes etc. The area is full of people, becak and Dakor(Horse carriage). The smells of Kretek(local cigarette mix with clove) fills the street, definitely not for the faint hearted. Although it is an experience for visitors like me, the could have done more to cater a little bit more to tourists. Restaurants are few and generally a little confusing to go about if you don't have a becak. Some alleys are dark and dirty so it is inconvenient to get from one point to another as some area looks scary to say the least.

    Dress Code: Anything goes.

LIP, Lembaga Indonesia Perancis: enjoy the night ala france

Wanna have a nice & "intelectual" night? Get your self there, check the activity at that very time. Perhaps you can watch the hillarious french movie, enjoy the local artist works (music, performances, paintings, etc), or simply taste the caffe from various places in Indonesia and talk with people there, in french, english, or indonesian!

    Made's!: "Hang Out!"

by dircelo Written Feb 17, 2006
    in the eve.

This is the spot to get in touch with Yogyan's or other tourists. Though it was pretty quiet, we had a relaxing and enjoyable time talking to nice people from the city.

They serve food too and you really can enjoy the atmosphere in being in a different part of a world, which you probably, as a tourist will not see soon again. (It still could be anywhere in the world.)

Dress Code: relaxed dresscode, I guess whatever you like is fine...as long as you respect...

    Nighttime Puppets: WAYANG GOLEK

by RoyJava Updated Aug 26, 2005

Nightlife in Yogyakarta is quite different from Western Disco & Pub-visits. Spending a nightlife party rather will transmit you to entertainment of traditional Javanese performing arts. Especially the Wayang Kulit (leather puppet performances) can be seen in the marathon all-night perfrmance till 5am, at Saturday in the alun-alun (South main square) of the Kraton!

I do prefer the Wayang Golek, the 3-dimensional wooden puppets with movable heads and arms ... with that mysterious sound of the gamelan.

Dress Code: All night long? Better bring a pillow and do not worry about your dress ...

U can actually get a rickshaw rider( who r univerity students)trying to earn the extra pocket money. They r usually stationed infront of a shopping complex in the centre of the town. These students will bring you knocking at the shops that you wanted to purchase eg: I got a beautiful hand painted batik 4 only US 20, mum bought many fine sarongs. We r very happy with the purchase as the price is reasonable. These students give such good service that they even ride us all the way back to our hotel which is abt 5km from town for a fee of RM5only. Out of gratitude I paid RM10!

    Malioboro Street (c) ukirsari

This is the lively part of Jogja after midnight. Where the teenagers, travellers and locals hang-out in togetherness called angkringan [literally have a seat nearby the street] or lesehan [literally sitting on mats] and get a cup of tea, coffee and snacks. This is my fave activity to do if I visit Jogja. So traditional, so nice, so close, up and personal :)
