Probably the only night spot in Jogja where all locals and tourists are seen to be shopping for batik, shoes etc. The area is full of people, becak and Dakor(Horse carriage). The smells of Kretek(local cigarette mix with clove) fills the street, definitely not for the faint hearted. Although it is an experience for visitors like me, the could have done more to cater a little bit more to tourists. Restaurants are few and generally a little confusing to go about if you don't have a becak. Some alleys are dark and dirty so it is inconvenient to get from one point to another as some area looks scary to say the least.

as a song singing by Frank Sinatra(theme song from NEW YORK-NEW YORK), yes Malioboro is one of Yogyakarta Night Spot, it was a place for shopping in various kind, Shopping Mall, Street Vendor, a place for eating and drinking in the night up to the early morning, it was the street that never sleep, while you enjoy the street restaurant, a group of music players approaching you, singing their songs or sing by your request, so, Malioboro in the night is a worth to visit%c

Wanna have a nice & "intelectual" night? Get your self there, check the activity at that very time. Perhaps you can watch the hillarious french movie, enjoy the local artist works (music, performances, paintings, etc), or simply taste the caffe from various places in Indonesia and talk with people there, in french, english, or indonesian!

This is the spot to get in touch with Yogyan's or other tourists. Though it was pretty quiet, we had a relaxing and enjoyable time talking to nice people from the city.
They serve food too and you really can enjoy the atmosphere in being in a different part of a world, which you probably, as a tourist will not see soon again. (It still could be anywhere in the world.)

Nightlife in Yogyakarta is quite different from Western Disco & Pub-visits. Spending a nightlife party rather will transmit you to entertainment of traditional Javanese performing arts. Especially the Wayang Kulit (leather puppet performances) can be seen in the marathon all-night perfrmance till 5am, at Saturday in the alun-alun (South main square) of the Kraton!
I do prefer the Wayang Golek, the 3-dimensional wooden puppets with movable heads and arms ... with that mysterious sound of the gamelan.
Dress Code: All night long? Better bring a pillow and do not worry about your dress ...
