Great Haguro San
Haguro-san is the smallest of Dewa Sanzan, the three mountains of Dewa in Yamagata Prefecture, northern Honshu. Accommodation is usually in temple lodgings. The feel of the place is very, very special, with ancient forests, temples and shrines peeking through foliage and a serenity that you don't often find. It is a place that combines Buddhist and Shinto religions, and I have to say I really "got" Shinto just by being there. Climbing the mountain is not difficult, stone steps have been cut into the mountain by monks hundreds of years ago (but I wouldn't recommend it in the rain, and going up is easier than coming down!) There are 2446 steps to the top, with a halfway stop for cold drinks and magnificent views. The peace and tranquility is truly magical. Yes, it's off the beaten track for most travellers to Japan, but if, like me, you can't get enough of Japan, you'll love it
