The Akarenga (red-brick) house was built as the headquarters of the former Akita Bank in the late Meiji period. It is a renaissance building with baroque style interior. The whole building has been preserved and is open to the public.

The Kanto Festival is one of the top three festivals held annually in Northern Japan.
Neburinagashi Kan is a museum of Kanto Festival, that you can see floats for the Kanto Festival, Bonden Festival and Tuchizaki Port Festival.
There is performance of Kanto every weekend between April 18 and October 25. You also can try to bring 'Kanto' (a long bamboo pole with many lighted lanterns).

As a Catholic, it is one of the significant destination that tested my faith. Getting around Japan outside the main cities is a challege especially when English is almost unheard of.
I went there in winter-time and yet the warmth and hospitality of the nuns radiated through me. Hearing mass in Japanese is a feat but nonetheless comforting. I can't wait to have another chance to return to Akita.
