Hirosaki Goen offers a sakura festival every year in April. It lasts for 3-5 days while the blossoms are at its best.
You'll be surrounded by all the beautiful blossoms and you'll feel really great, revitalise and really feel the beauty of the nature.

Address: Hirosaki Goen
My host family has a beautiful log house on the mountain as they are avid skiiers and I was lucky enough to go there with them. We ate yaki-niku (meat bbq), sang karaoke and enjoyed the crisp, fresh air. On the drive up, there are numerous fruit and vegetable stalls - do yourself a favour and stop so that you can have some hot, fresh corn on the cob - yum!

When in Rome do as the Romans do and EAT APPLES! Hirosaki is famous for its delicious apples and they will not disappoint. Apples from Hirosaki are literally the largest apples I have ever seen - enough for a whole meal. When cut open, they often have what is called mitsu in the middle ( a sweet area) and it is tastes so good. Nashi are also recommended. Do not limit yourself only to fresh apples, try out the famous apple juice as well! You might even want to try and pick some for yourself!

In Aomori, visit Lake Towada to see the Autumn leaves. The scenery is breathtaking, especially for someone like myself who lives somewhere tropical.

Unfortunately, Hirosaki is not easily accessible from the major cities of Japan. It is about an eight hour drive from Tokyo and the Shinkansen doesn't even go as far as Aomori. I usually catch the overnight train to Aomori (shindai-ressha) - it takes around 14 hours from Kyoto, but you don't really notice it as you depart at night, sleep for most of the journey and then you arrive in the morning. It is expensive so you would probably want to have other plans in Tohoku or maybe even continue on to Hokkaido via the undersea Seikan tunnel. FYI, the total length of the Seikan tunnel which connects Honshu with Hokkaido is 53.85km and at its deepest point reaches 240m below sea level. Construction began in 1971 and was completed in March, 1988.

Favorite thing: Food:
You can purchase food at the Goen as people will set up stalls.
For special souvenirs, you can get japanese desserts made with the sakura blossoms, pink and sweet, tastes like heaven.
Weather:
Check the weather before you leave for the Park. Temperature may vary even though they are just an hour's journey away.
Fondest memory: The Beautiful Cherry Blossoms, the co-existance of Old and New.
The people come in traditional costumes, dance along to enka and just enjoying the beauty of nature

Favorite thing: Visit Hirosaki castle in the spring time. I have been told that it is one of the most scenic places in Japan for cherry blossom viewing. I am not surprised. Hirosaki castle is tiny when compared with monster castles such as Himeji and Kumamoto, but so much cuter.
