I am female and after college lived in Yokohama as a gaijin (foreigner) for four years. I felt that it was quite safe Japan and would walk around alone at night from the train station, etc. However, during one of those long distance phone calls back home, my mom gave me some good advice, "Just because you think the Japanese are safe, don't forget there are other foreigners living there too." I realized that no matter how safe a place is you still need to be cautious and not take risks.

Common sense tells you that if you are female and alone in a train car with other men and it is late at night, best to walk to a more populated train car. Groping seems to be the most common assault for women in Japan.

On my travels to Yokohama, I felt very safe walking through the streets with my wallet stuffed full of money in my back pocket. I have no warnings or danger tips for this city. The people are very friendly and polite, and you never have to worry about someone picking your pockets. Even walking down dark alleys and streets at night with my friend we still felt very safe. Feeling unsafe or threatened in Yokohama is not present, or was not to me: A wonderful city to travel to, I highly recommend it.
