    Getting to Imabari by Train

by Rabbityama Written Jun 16, 2013

Imabari Station is the main station in the city and it's well-connected to the mainland. All Shikoku-bound trains depart from Okayama Station.

The fastest way to reach Imabari is to take one of the Limited Express Trains. All of the trains bound for Matsuyama and Uwajima will stop at Imabari on the way. It is sometimes faster to take the Marine Liner to Sakaide and then catch a Limited Express Train from there (or Tadotsu Station).

If you have the Seishun 18 Ticket, you cannot take the Limited Express Trains, so you'll have to take the Marine Liner to Sakaide and then continue traveling west on the JR Yosan Line. You will most likely have to change trains at Kanonji and Iyo-Saijo Stations, although there are some trains that continue through these cities.

    Shinkansen to Imabari

by FamousWorldTraveller Updated Apr 4, 2011
    Shinkansen Bullet Train

My wife and I took the Shinkansen from Osaka to Imabari. It's a three-hour trip, including an easy change at Okayama. Get the Shinkansen at Shin Osaka station. The station is in the center of town, near several hotels. If you have luggage, it would be easiest to get a taxi. Taxi drivers should be able to find your hotel for you if you tell them the name.

Imabari is kind of spread out, so it's useful to have a car. We had a wonderful guide from an organization called Imabari Tours (http://www.imabariculture.ch) who drove us everywhere we needed to go. Many of the things like the hot springs and the bridge are too far out of town to walk.

As you near Shokaku Island on the Shinkansen, don't forget to look at the beautiful bridges spanning the Seto Inland Sea.

Detailed instructions on how to get there:

Travel Instructions to Imabari by Shinkansen

    FROM TOKYO:

    1. Take Nozomi Shinkansen to Okayama (usually platforms 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, or 19, but check listings at station to confirm). Travel time to Okayama is about 3 hours 30 minutes.

    2. Change at Okayama for Matsuyama on the YOSANSEN line. Imabari is on the way to Matsuyama. To make the change at Okayama, walk up the steps of the station bridge and go to the entrance of the YOSANSEN line for Matsuyama. You can find it next to the arrival platform.

    3. Get off the train in Imabari (don’t forget!). Travel time from Okayama is just over two hours.
