Taruto Cake

Matsuyama is also known for its confectionary. Taruto is the most famous of these and is often bought to take back home as omiyage or 'souvenir'. Taruto is a sponge cake rolled with sweet bean paste. The origin of the sponge cake is in Nagasaki (where many Portuguese ships came to port) but was modified in Matsuyama to suit the palate of the region.

Botchan Dango

Botchan Dango is another famous product in the Ehime Region. Dango is three coloured dumplings on a stick. The Botchan Dango are named after the novel "Botchan" by Soseki Natsume (who happens to be the same guy featured on the 1000 yen note).

The dumplings contain sweet bean paste coloured by adzuki beans, eggs and powdered green tea in it.

A good place to find this local delicacy is the shopping area surrounding Dogo Hot Spring.

It's the most popular sweets 'Bocchan Dango (balls)' in Matsuyama. I already mentioned 'Bocchan' before, they used his name for this original sweets. It's made of rice cake covered with beans paste jam. The taste is ...umm a little bit sweet for me!?
